HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – The Marshall baseball team released its 2012 schedule Wednesday afternoon, revealing that they will face two ACC teams and an SEC team in the first month of play.

The schedule features competition against five different teams who made it to the College World Series Regionals last year including East Carolina, Rice, UCF, NC State, and Southern Miss.

Head Coach Waggoner stated when asked about the 2012 schedule, “We have our hands full. That’s why this fall is very important for preparation and we look forward to the challenge.”

The team will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to open up the season and face NC State in the season-opener, February 17.

“Once again our schedule is very competitive this year,” continued Waggoner. “We open up with NC State and go back to my old stomping grounds, where I was an assistant coach before I came to Marshall. Coach Elliott Avent does a great job with his program it will be a tough game.”

After their trip to Raleigh, N.C., the squad will travel around the Carolinas for games against Charleston Southern, Eastern Michigan and Wake Forest. After playing Wake Forest twice throughout the weekend of March 3, Marshall will face SEC opposition, Kentucky on March 7.

Following non-conference games against Gardner-Webb, Morehead State, St. Bonaventure, and Ohio, the first conference match-up will be a weekend series against UAB in Birmingham, Ala., starting on March 23. After the UAB series, the Herd scheduled non-conference teams Liberty and Ohio and will follow those games with two consecutive weekends on the road against conference foes, Memphis and last year’s first place team in C-USA, Rice.

“The conference is a grind,” said Waggoner about conference opposition. “Every night you are in a battle. We have some very tough programs early on, but what you are trying to do is prepare your players for conference play. The schedule that we put together should help us prepare for conference competition.”

The latter part of the season will be mainly conference games, two of which will be home series against Southern Miss and UCF.
The Conference USA tournament will begin May 23 and will take place in Jackson, Mississippi.
