College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the countdown today at number 88 with Texas Tech’s John Neely. The Sugarland, Texas native attended Clements High School. He won varsity letters in both baseball and football while going 7-1 as a senior.
He decided to continue his baseball career at North Central Texas College under Scott Harp and Eric Wright during the 2009 season. He went 5-0 record with a 2.77 ERA over nine games and 39 innings pitched while striking out 42 batters and issuing 19 walks.
Neely decided to transfer to Texas Tech to play Division 1 baseball under Dan Spencer. As a sophomore in 2010, he made 10 appearances (3 starts) with a 1-1 record, one save and a 5.92 ERA in 24.1 innings pitched with 33 base hits allowed, 20 runs allowed (16 earned) with 16 strikeouts and nine walks allowed while opponents batted .377. His junior season saw him make 30 appearances – all in relief – with a 9-1 record, 2.97 ERA, seven saves, 60.2 innings pitched, combined on one shutout, allowed 59 hits, 20 runs (all earned) with 56 strikeouts, 21 walks allowed while opponents batted .266 and without allowing a home run. He ended up leading Texas Tech in wins, ERA, appearances, saves, strikeouts and opponent batting average. He was honored as a NCBWA Third Team All-America, CollegeBaseballInsider.com All-America honorable mention, and All-Big 12 second team (Coaches).
