Top 100 Countdown: 93. Zack Weiss (UCLA)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 93 with UCLA sophomore RHP Zack Weiss. He is a 6’2 210 right hander out of Irvine, California where he attended Northwood High School. He was a two-year varsity baseball letterwinner under head coach Rob Stuart at Northwood High. As a senior, he went 7-5 with a 2.45 ERA, 82 strikeouts, 34 walks and two saves in 65.2 innings. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected him 10th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. 

He spent the summer of 2010 with the Wenatchee AppleSox of the West Coast Collegiate League. He was outstanding as he appeared in 17 games over the summer going 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA for Wenatchee with 31 strikeouts, nine walks and three saves in 28.2 innings.

As a freshman in 2011, he made 22 appearances, including nine starts becoming the Bruins top weekday starter. He went a respectable 5-3 with a 2.86 ERA, recording 53 strikeouts and 22 walks in 66.0 innings. He was named a Freshman All-America honors from Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball.

He spent the summer of 2011 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Yarmouth Dennis Red Sox. He made nine appearances (five starts) going 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA, totaling 17 strikeouts and 14 walks in 33.0 innings.
