Big East looking to Expand

The Big East conference is looking to “aggressively pursue” expansion according to commissioner John Marinatto after a five hour meeting with league presidents on Sunday. It was the first time that the league presidents have met since Pitt and Syracuse announced on September 16th that they will leave the Big East to the ACC.

Marinatto stated the the conference will look to “a select number of institutions who have indicated a strong interest in joining.” When asked directly during his press conference if the league had reached out to Air Force and Navy like reported, he declined comment. He did state though that the service academies do fit into the type of schools that the league is looking at.

Interesting enough TCU Chancellor  Victor J. Boschini Jr. attended the meeting to discuss his school’s stance which is suppose to join the conference for the 2012-2013. Marinatto stated that the Horned Frogs were “very committed” to the Big East which disputes reports that TCU will be going to the Big 12 to help replace the loss of Texas A&M.

If the Big East added Navy and Air Force to the conference, it will hurt the baseball side of the conference as both Navy and Air Force are not even close to being considered powers in their respective conferences right now.

Wouldn’t the best deal be to add Missouri, Kansas and Kansas State from the Big XII?  Then, maybe TCU would have cause to stay.

Each of the 3 Big XII schools could be respectable in basketball — and Kansas a bonanza.  Each would vastly improve the Big East’s football portfolio.

Each of the 3 — along with TCU — would make the Big East a legitimate baseball conference, instead of “Louisville and the Sundry Dwarves”.  (No, Brian, Connecticut is not a legitimate baseball program — just a one-night stand.  The ACC will now prove that to you in spades.)

I like to know when I said UConn was a legit power in College Baseball? They had a team loaded with two first round picks which lets be honest hasn’t happened in the ACC in a few years.

The real test for UConn will be to see what happens in 2014 as I don’t see them making the NCAA tournament in 2012 or 2013 based on the talent in the system right now. Maybe I am wrong but I am not planning on attending too many UConn games in the next two years to see the Huskies.

Navy Baseball won their Patriot League Conference last year and are looking to repeat this year as well.  They may not be up to par with some of the schools in the Big East, but they’ll be able to hold their own.  Don’t write out Navy Baseball.
