POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Justin Haywood has been hired as an assistant coach with the Marist baseball program. Haywood’s on-field responsibilities include working with the team’s catchers and hitters.

“We are excited to have Justin become our newest member of the Marist Family,” Head Coach Chris Tracz said. “He brings an energy and passion that is infectious. He shares the same beliefs and philosophy of succeeding on and off the field, and we look forward to him teaching and mentoring our student-athletes.”

Prior to coming to Marist, Haywood served as volunteer assistant coach at Old Dominion University for the 2011 season under the direction of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year Nate Goulet. He worked primarily with the catchers, outfielders and hitters, and coached Freshman All-American Joey Burney. Additionally, Haywood coached first base and was in charge of putting together all scouting reports. Old Dominion finished 30-26, good for second in the CAA.

In 2009, Haywood performed duties as assistant administrator for the 2009 USA Collegiate National team that won the World Baseball Challenge. With the national team, he assisted the media/travel coordinator and caught in the bullpen.

As a student-athlete, Haywood played for four years at the University of Louisville as a catcher. In his time at Louisville, the baseball team won four Big East Tournament Championships, made four NCAA regional appearances, two Super Regional appearances and the 2007 College World Series. Haywood was twice named to the AD Honor Roll and Big East Academic All-Star.

He played in the 2004 Big League World Series for U.S. South team that placed fifth.

Haywood graduated from the University of Louisville in 2010 with a B.S. degree in sport management.
