Cape Cod Baseball League Players of the Week (August 9th)
COCA COLA PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Brent Suter, Wareham LHP
Brent Suter (Harvard) is this week’s Coca Cola Pitcher of the Week after recording what might be the defining clutch pitching performance of this year’s playoffs. UC-Davis names Matt Vaughn as Head Coach

DAVIS, Calif. – Rex Peters, who spent the past nine seasons as head coach of the UC Davis baseball team, has announced his resignation to pursue another coaching opportunity and associate head coach Matt Vaughn, who has been a part of the program for more than 20 years, has been named head coach, it was announced by interim director of athletics Nona Richardson on Monday.
Peters leaves UC Davis after compiling a record of 234-265-1 in his nine years as head coach which includes two postseason appearances. Vaughn, an Aggie pitcher from 1989-92, enjoys a long affiliation with UC Davis and has spent the last 19 seasons as an assistant under former head coach Phil Swimley and Peters. Matt Kirby Named Virginia Baseball Volunteer Assistant Coach

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Matt Kirby has been named the volunteer assistant coach on the Virginia baseball coaching staff, as announced Monday (Aug. 8 ) by UVa head coach Brian O’Connor. A graduate of William and Mary, Kirby spent the last two seasons as a coach at Georgetown.
“I am very excited to have Matt Kirby join our coaching staff at UVa,” O’Connor said. “I have been fortunate to spend time with Matt over the last eight years and I believe he will bring a great knowledge of the game, high energy level and work ethic to our baseball program. Matt will also bring a lot of experience to our program as he has spent the last eight years at a variety of institutions. He is a native of Virginia and I know he is looking forward to the opportunity to get on the field and start working with our players.”
Kirby’s primary duties include assisting with the day-to-day development of position players as well as camps and other administrative duties.

Eric Erickson looking to return to Miami (FL)
Eric Erickson is looking to return to the Miami (FL) pitching staff for the 2012 season according to CBD sources. He had an outstanding freshman season in 2007 going 10-4 with a 2.50 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 90 innings. Bubba Starling’s career with the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the football field is on hold right now according to Huskers head football coach Bo Pelini in the Omaha-World Herald. Starling was selected by Kansas City Royals with the fifth overall pick and is being advised by Scott Boras. If he does not sign with the Royals, Starling will get back on the practice field with the Nebraska football program and will not be able to sign with a MLB team until the 2014 MLB Draft. Astros donate Van to Buddy Lamothe
Everyone knows the story behind Arizona State’s Cory Hahn or Georgia’s Johnathan Taylor suffering devastating neck injuries this past spring. There was another spinal cord injury that happened just before the 2011 MLB Draft to San Jacinto College’s Buddy Lamothe who suffered an injury which has severely hurt his mobility. Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 11 Orleans Firebirds 10
Yarmouth-Dennis scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to turn a 10-7 deficit into an 11-10 victory as the Red Sox won their playoff series against Orleans two games to none. James Ramsey (Florida State) continued his strong hitting with two homers and driving in three runs.
