The Citadel legendary coach Chal Port passes away

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former Head Baseball Coach and Citadel Hall of Fame Honorary Inductee Chal Port passed away early Saturday morning after a prolonged illness.

Port compiled an overall record of 641-386-2 (.624) in 27 seasons (1965-91) and remains the winningest coach in the school’s history in any sport. An honorary inductee in The Citadel Hall of Fame in 1996, Port led The Citadel to five postseason NCAA Regional Tournaments while posting a winning record in 24 of his 27 seasons. His 1990 team advanced to the College World Series in Omaha with a school-record 46 victories. That squad was the first and still only military school ever to reach the College World Series. SDSU’s Tony Gwynn receives New Three-Year Contract

SAN DIEGO – San Diego State Director of Athletics Jim Sterk has announced that Tony Gwynn has signed a new contract to continue as the Aztecs’ head baseball coach for the next three years.

Gwynn completed his ninth year at the helm of the SDSU program this past season after assuming the head coaching role for the 2002 campaign. During his tenure, he has taken his squads to a regular-season Mountain West Conference title (2004) and a trip to the NCAA Regionals (2009). His teams have finished lower than third in the final league standings only once during his tenure. Chuck Jeroloman added to TCU Pitching Staff

Brian Grunzke named Assistant Coach at South Dakota State

South Dakota State University baseball coach Dave Schrage announced Thursday the hiring of Brian Grunzke as assistant coach.

“We are very fortunate to be able to hire someone as experienced and successful as Brian Grunzke,” Schrage said. “He has a very extensive background as both a head and assistant coach. Travis Beazley named Pitching Coach at VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. – Travis Beazley, former Boston Red Sox minor leaguer and Randolph-Macon assistant coach, has been named the new pitching coach for VMI baseball, according to information released by the program Thursday.

Beazley joins VMI after spending a year as an assistant at Randolph-Macon, during which time he worked with the pitchers, infielders and hitters for the 2011 ODAC Champions and NCAA Regional participants. Cal State Fullerton Announces 2012 Baseball Schedule

Fullerton, Calif. – The 2012 Cal State Fullerton baseball schedule, headlined by an opening weekend series with College World Series runner-up University of Florida, was released Thursday by first-year Titan Head Coach Rick Vanderhook.

The Titans have a diverse 58-game slate set up with 30 of the games being played at Goodwin Field, home of the four-time national champion Titan baseball program. They will face 21 different opponents across nine conferences – from as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii, and stretching as far east as Gainsville, Florida. Read the rest of this entry »

Cal-State Northridge hires Eric Newman as Pitching Coach

Tennessee releases 2012 Schedule

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee baseball program announced the full schedule for the 2012 campaign, its first under head coach Dave Serrano, on Wednesday. Highlighting the slate are 26 games against a total of 10 teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year, including home sets against Seton Hall, Alabama, Florida, Vanderbilt and Arkansas.

“We came out pretty good,” Serrano said. “I feel we will be challenged and have a good balance of home and away games. I’m excited. We want to find out about our team, so we want to challenge our team each and every weekend and in mid-week games so that we can learn some things about them and be able to prepare them to be successful in the SEC.” Read the rest of this entry »

Jason Laws added to Arkansas State Coaching Staff

JONESBORO, Ark. (8/17/11) – Arkansas State head baseball coach Tommy Raffo announced Wednesday the addition of Jason Laws as a volunteer assistant coach with the Red Wolves for the upcoming season.

Wally Crancer Named Georgia Tech Volunteer Assistant Coach

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech baseball head coach Danny Hall has announced the addition of former Yellow Jacket outfielder Wally Crancer as the volunteer assistant coach on Wednesday.

Crancer comes to the Flats after spending four seasons in the minors with the Baltimore Orioles organization, eventually retiring in May in 2010. His best season came in 2009, when he batted .302 with eight home runs and 34 RBI in 61games with the Frederick Keys. Read the rest of this entry »

FIU Signs Turtle Thomas to Extension

MIAMI – FIU Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia announced today that Head Baseball Coach Henry “Turtle” Thomas has signed a new contract extension with the University through the 2016 season.

Tyler Beede Going to Vanderbilt….Good or Bad?
