SAN DIEGO – San Diego State Director of Athletics Jim Sterk has announced that Tony Gwynn has signed a new contract to continue as the Aztecs’ head baseball coach for the next three years.
Gwynn completed his ninth year at the helm of the SDSU program this past season after assuming the head coaching role for the 2002 campaign. During his tenure, he has taken his squads to a regular-season Mountain West Conference title (2004) and a trip to the NCAA Regionals (2009). His teams have finished lower than third in the final league standings only once during his tenure. He was named the conference coach of the year in 2004 after leading the Aztecs to a first-place league finish.
Over the past nine season Gwynn has coach a pair of All-Americans plus five freshman All-America selections and four all-Region honorees. A total of 44 of his players have received all-conference recognition as well. In addition 40 Aztec have been chose by Major League clubs in the annual amateur draft including 13 in the first 10 rounds.
“Now that the contract has been signed, we can concentrate on our goal of moving the program in the right direction,” commented Gwynn. “We made progress, but there’s still a lot of work to be done. “I am still fully committed to my job here at San Diego State and look forward to continue building on the program in the future.”

What a joke, why do they keep giving this guy more years? He has buried that program, a program that has more potential than an other program in CA for sure, probably the nation. Obviously no one at SD has the stones to tell Tony he needs to find a graceful way out before they have to push him out. With the recruiting area afforded SDSU they should be right up their with TCU in that league and should never miss the postseason. I was sick reading the section in the article that list Gwynn’s accomplishments (or lack of them), I honestly feel bad for the guy who had to write the article and try find anything positive to highlight in the 9 years of TOTAL FAILURE that is Tony Gwynn as a D1 head coach. When Gwynn took that job did he offer up a 15 year plan for success? A good baseball coach could turn that thing around in 3 years, Gwynn had done nothing in 9 years, condolences to all SDSU players, fans, and alumni,  SDSU baseball, RIP.
The worst thing that could of happened to SDSU was Stephen Strasburg. It sort of gave Gwynn a pass since they made a regional that year and really haven’t been bringing in the great talent like they should. @markraff:twitter  attended the SDSU tournament last year and his entire report was on the opponents of the Aztecs since there wasn’t much talent at SDSU.Â
SDSU should be an absolute power. USD – A private Catholic that costs nearly 50k a yr and doesn’t have as nice of facilities is able to be a contender HOW is SDSU not able to.
