The MLB Signing Deadline is fast approaching as all teams have until midnight on August 15th to sign their draft picks or they will head to college for the 2012 season. Here is the latest news and notes from around the country.
Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post reports that there has been no real progress with the Washington Nationals top four draft picks Anthony Rendon (Rice), Alex Meyer (Kentucky), Brian Goodwin (Miami-Dade CC) and Matt Purke (TCU). This is typical of the top draft picks in the draft and it is expected that these players will sign before the deadline on August 15th.
Rhode Island signee Jeff Diehl is expected to sign with the New York Mets tomorrow according to a report from the Providence Journal. Diehl’s father said the combined signing bonus and education-tuition payments will be worth “a little over $300,000.” Diehl was expected to compete for the starting catcher position with the Rams in the fall.
