Florida State to get “New” Playing Surface

The Florida State baseball program will be getting a new playing surface for the 2012 season as Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. The field has been an issue in the past most recently in the 2011 NCAA Tournament where the Alabama and Florida State matchup was suspended after a torrential downpour left the field unplayable.

Head Coach Mike Martin Sr. told the Tallahassee Democrat

“That game would have been completed that night (with the new field), “But with the one we had, we had no chance.

“It just gives us that feeling the weather is not going to affect us in preparation or determining the outcome of the game. Using (Sean Gilmartin) as an example — say we’ve got the field covered in the third inning. We get a torrential downpour that lasts half an hour. We pull the tarp and we can play again in 30 to 45 minutes. We can use that same pitcher again. It’s just a big advantage.”

Not sure what is wrong with the story, but would like to read it (see it for that matter)

Didn’t recognize that the Democrat was a subscription site….the article I read was free. It is nothing special just says that the field will be up to MLB standards and drain much better.
