Joe Mercadante resigns as Miami (FL) Hitting Coach

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami assistant baseball coach Joe Mercadante has turned in his official letter of resignation to head coach Jim Morris.

Mercadante spent the previous seven years at UM working with hitters and catchers. He spent his first four seasons in Coral Gables as a volunteer assistant coach before becoming the team’s hitting coach following the 2008 season. Read the rest of this entry »

2011 CWS Dates and Times Announced

OMAHA—The game times and pairings for the first two days of the Men’s College World Series have been announced. The 65th MCWS will take place at the TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha from June 18-28/29.

The first game on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (CT) and features the only first time participant and No. 6 national seed, Vanderbilt (52-10), against No. 3 national seed North Carolina (50-14). Saturday’s second game pits No. 2 national seed Florida (50-17) against No.7 national seed Texas (49-17), and is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. (CT) Read the rest of this entry »

Virginia wins Super Regional to advance to CWS

Chris Taylor’s two-out, walk-off, two –RBI single in the bottom of the ninth propelled Virginia (54-10) to a comeback 3-2 win over UC-Irvine(43-18) in game three of the Charlottesville Super Regional. With the win the Cavaliers earned their second trip to the College World Series in the last three seasons.

Branden Kline (4-1) got the win in relief of Will Roberts who was stellar going 7.1, allowing one run on five hits, walking one and striking out one. Anteater ace Matt Summers (11-4) made his first relief appearance of the season and suffering his second loss of the series as he surrendered two runs on three hits and giving a critical walk in the bottom of the ninth to load the bases for Taylor heroics. Texas A&M advances to CWS

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the first time since 1999, the Texas A&M baseball team is headed to Omaha, Neb., and the College World Series as Monday the Aggies punched their ticket with an 11-2 victory over Florida State during the deciding game of the NCAA Tallahassee Super Regional.

“I am proud for our coaches, our players, our university, our community that we were able to win this Super Regional and we are moving on to Omaha,” Texas A&M head coach Rob Childress said. “Very proud for everyone that is involved in our athletic department, our baseball program and our community.” Read the rest of this entry »

2011 NCBWA Division I Freshman All-American Team

LYNCHBURG, VA. (NCBWA) – A total of 34 standout freshmen college baseball players from every part of the country are featured on the 2011 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American Team, the organization announced today.

The 2011 NCBWA Freshman All-American Team features players from 17 conferences and seven conference championship teams. The two All-American squads are also made up of 14 conference “Rookie of the Year” winners. Read the rest of this entry »

CBD Quick Hits: Texas 4, Arizona State 2

This game, unfortunately, will always be remembered for a unique situation that led to a controversial call from the umpires. From the walk that was overruled by an umpire’s call of batter interference, the Longhorns held the Sun Devils to only a pair of base runners over the final five innings. Arizona State, which picked up their runs on a first inning homer from Riccio Torrez, never quite recovered the momentum they built up in the early stages of the game, and stumbled out of the playoffs in a 4-2 defeat. Florida State forces Game 3 with Texas A&M

Texas advances to 2011 CWS with 4-2 win over Arizona State

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 5 Texas Longhorns used exemplary staff pitching and timely hitting to punch their ticket to the NCAA Men’s College World Series on Sunday by beating the Arizona State Sun Devils 4-2 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in game three of the Austin Super Regional.

UC-Irvine forces Game 3 with 6-4 win over Virginia

For the second day in a row the Charlottesville Super Regional was delayed by rain but unlike Saturday when the rain seemed to give the Virginia Cavaliers a spark, it was Irvine that came back from the break with a purpose and a 6-4 win to tie the series at a game apiece.

Freshman Andrew Thurman (4-3) tossed four innings of solid baseball giving up a lone run on three hits while striking out four, leading UC-Irvine (43-17) to a win in game two of the Charlottesville Super Regional. CBD Quick Hits: Texas 5, Arizona State 1

Tonight’s game seemed like it was going to be another nail-biter. Each team was making plays on defense, and the pitching staff was keeping things in check. Then Jordan Etier decided to hit a curveball and sent it over the Longhorn bullpen for a three-run home run in the ninth inning.
