Illinois Pitching Coach Ken Westray Retires

According to sources close to the Illinois program, Illini pitching coach Ken Westray has retired. He completed his fifth season with the school helping lead the team to the Regional Final against Stanford in the Cal-State Fullerton Regional. The pitching staff finished with a 4.97 ERA.

Vanderbilt wins Game 1 over UNC 7-3

The Vanderbilt Commodores and the North Carolina Tar Heels opened up the TD Ameritrade Park in the first game of the 2011 College World Series. The big star of the game was the first pitch by former president George Walker Bush. Once the teams get settled from the former president’s appearance, Vanderbilt picked up the 7-3 victory over North Carolina.

Both starting pitchers struggled with their control in the game as Sonny Gray lasted only 4.2 innings while Patrick Johnson left after six.

The Commodores jumped on the Tar Heels early as UNC starting pitcher Patrick Johnson opened the game up by making a poor throw to first on a Tony Kemp bunt. He ended up scoring the first run of the CWS on an Aaron Westlake sacrifice fly to center. Read the rest of this entry »

Ted Silva Named Pitching Coach at Nebraska

Nebraska baseball coach Darin Erstad announced the second addition to his coaching staff on Friday, as Ted Silva has been hired as the Huskers’ pitching coach. Silva comes to Lincoln from the West Coast, where he has spent the past four seasons as the pitching coach at UC Irvine and Loyola Marymount.

For college baseball players, coaches and fans, this one word holds more weight than all others. It’s the goal of every program in the country. It’s the reason why some high schoolers come to college rather than turn pro, or why collegiate players like Aaron Westlake and Taylor Hill decided to pass over the draft and return to college for their senior seasons. Until Saturday night, Omaha was a goal of the Vanderbilt Baseball program that had yet to be fulfilled. Koerner Named NCCU’s Head Baseball Coach

(NCCUEaglePride.com) – With more 10 years of collegiate coaching experience at both the NCAA Division I and III levels, Jim Koerner has been named the head baseball coach at North Carolina Central University. Koerner is coming to NCCU from the University at Buffalo, where he helped build the Division I Bulls baseball program as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator since 2005.
