Cliff Godwin joins Ole Miss Coaching Staff

OXFORD, Miss. – Cliff Godwin has joined the Ole Miss baseball coaching staff as the program’s new hitting coach, head coach Mike Bianco announced on Tuesday.

Godwin comes to the Rebels after spending the last three seasons as the associate head coach at the University of Central Florida, where he ran the Knights’ offense and also served as the recruiting coordinator. Read the rest of this entry »

Mike Evans joins NMSU Coaching Staff

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State baseball head coach Rocky Ward announced that Mike Evans is the new assistant coach for the Aggie baseball team, Tuesday, June 21.

Before joining Ward’s staff as the new pitching coach, Evans was the head coach at Bellevue University for 22 seasons. While at Bellevue, he tallied a 928-457-1 record and led the Bruins to 12 NAIA World Series appearances while earning a NAIA National Championship in 1995. Read the rest of this entry »

UCSB set to name Andrew Checketts Head Coach

UC-Santa Barbara will name current Oregon assistant coach Andrew Checketts as their next head coach. Checketts has been on the Oregon coaching staff since the program returned bringing them to a 3.29 ERA this year. This will be a return to the Big West conference for Checketts who served as the pitching coach at UC Riverside before heading to Eugene. A full release is expected later today after the press conference to announce the hire.

Chris Finwood named Head Coach at Old Dominion

Chris Finwood has been hired as the new head coach at Old Dominion according to Tom Robinson of The Virginian Pilot. Finwood has spent the last four seasons in charge of the Western Kentucky program including bringing them to the NCAA Tournament in 2009. This is the second time that current Old Dominion atheltic director Wood Selig would hire Finwood. He also served as the Athletic Director at Western Kentucky when Finwood was hired with the Hilltoppers. Read the rest of this entry »

Taylor Jungmann wins 2011 Dick Howser Award

OMAHA, Neb. – Texas junior pitcher Taylor Jungmann is the recipient of the 25th annual Dick Howser Trophy, presented by Easton Foundations, as college baseball’s player of the year. The presentation was made Tuesday morning as part of a news conference at TD Ameritrade Park, with several other 2011 national honors being awarded as well.

The 25th anniversary of the Dick Howser Trophy presented by Easton Foundations was even more special by the awarding of this year’s honor at TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha, the new home of the College World Series. Read the rest of this entry »

Texas’ Corey Knebel Named 2011 NCBWA Stopper of the Year

OMAHA, Neb. — Texas relief pitcher Corey Knebel is the 2011 recipient of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Award, the NCBWA announced Tuesday at the College World Series.

Knebel, the NCBWA Freshman Pitcher of the Year and a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, set the Texas freshmen record with 19 saves and was 3-2 with a 1.13 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 55.2 innings. He allowed just 28 hits and seven earned runs, while holding opponents to a .151 batting average. With two saves in Super Regional play, he has posted the most saves of any pitcher in the nation this season. In addition, he has made 38 appearances, the most in the Big 12 this year. Cal’s David Esquer named 2011 NCBWA Coach of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS – After his team was scheduled to be discontinued after the 2011 season, California head coach David Esquer led the Golden Bears to the program’s first appearance at the NCAA College World Series since 1992, while earning him the National Coach of the Year Award presented by the National College Baseball Writers Association. Sights and Sounds from CWS Tornado Scare

On Monday night, Vanderbilt and Florida faced off in a winner’s bracket matchup at the College World Series. Tornado sirens went off in the sixth inning but the teams continued to play on T.D. Ameritrade Park for two more outs while the stands cleared.
