Charlottesville, VA – Will Roberts (11-1) went nine shutout innings, scattering fours hits and setting down a career high 14 via the strikeout as the Virginia Cavaliers (50-9) took the opening game of the Charlottesville Regional. Designated hitter Danny Hultzen provide the offensive firepower going 3-for-4 including a triple and two singles and knocking in three Virginia base runners as the Hoos blanked Navy (33-24-1) 6-0. Luis Pollorena and Caleb Reed worked together to give 3rd seeded Mississippi State an eight-hit shutout of 2nd seed Southern Miss in the 3-0 win for the Bulldogs to open the Atlanta regional. Facing Southern Miss for the second time this season, MSU starter Luis Pollorena (7-5) pulled off an even more impressive performance this time around by pitching six innings giving up five hits, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. It was an afternoon of firsts as the Charlotte 49ers defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks to open the Tempe, Ariz. Regional, 3-2 at Packard Stadium in the desert. The win was the third in the postseason for the 49ers, sending No. 28 Charlotte (43-14) to the winner’s bracket final tomorrow night at 10 p.m. Eastern against host Arizona State, which scored three in the ninth on a walkoff homer to win 4-3 over New Mexico.
