2011 NCAA Charlottesville Regional: Day 3 Recap

The University of Virginia used a 31-run and 41-hit offensive explosion to cruise through the Charlottesville Regional winning its three games by an average score of 10.1 to 1.
The offense was strong but the Cavalier pitching was superb. Cavalier hurlers yielded only three runs during the entire regional a mark which ties the record for the second-fewest number of runs allowed in an NCAA regional since the tournament went to a 64-team format in 1999, matching Arizona State in 2003. HOUSTON, TEXAS – Overcoming a two hour and 43 minute lightening delay, the California baseball team continued its 2011 season with a 6-3 victory over No. 9-ranked Rice Sunday (June 5) in NCAA regional action at Rice’s Reckling Park. After scoring a run in the seventh inning on senior left fielder Austin Booker’s RBI single that tied the game, 3-3, the Golden Bears had to wait over two hours before scoring three runs in the bottom of the eight on three Owl errors and an RBI single by sophomore second baseman Tony Renda. 2011 NCAA Los Angeles Regional: Day 3 Recap
Ronnie Schaeffer’s ninth inning single past first baseman Dean Espy, vaulted UC Irvine into the Super Regional for the third time in the past five seasons. Mike Gillespie’s Anteaters won their third straight at the Los Angeles Regional, besting the Bruins, helmed by his former Assistant John Savage, 4-3. They will now travel to Charlottesville to take on the Cavaliers of Virginia.
The ‘Eaters, buoyed by their vocal and spirited cheering section, were rendered uncomfortably silent over the first eight by UCLA Freshman Zach Weiss. Weiss limited Irvine to six hits and two runs, before he was replaced by Nick Vander Tyg after walking pinch-hitter Jonathan Hurst to start the ninth. With Irvine trailing 3-2, Hurst battled for nine pitches before drawing the free pass on a 3-2 pitch, and Bruin Head Coach John Savage signalled to the bullpen. Read the rest of this entry »
2011 NCAA Atlanta Regional: Day 3 Recap

After losing to Austin Peay on Friday, Georgia Tech took offense to the tough pitching of Jack Snodgrass for the Governors. The victim to the hungry Jackets was Zach Toney. Tech scored three early and never looked back to roll 12-2 over fourth seeded Austin Peay (34-24). Toney (6-3) lasted only 2.1 innings with five earned runs. Ryne Harper also gave up five earned but threw 4.1 innings. Tech totaled 18 hits on the afternoon to stave off elimination. The fireworks of Georgia Tech’s offense was highlighted by four homeruns. Daniel Palka, Matt Skole, Jake Davies, and Zane Evans all left the yard. Skole went 3-4 on the day and was a triple away from the cycle.Tech emptied the bench as the game neared an end to give the starters some extra rest for the following contest with Mississippi State. One starter who remained in the game though was Buck Farmer who earned his 11th win of the season and finished hte year 11-3. Farmer threw a complete game allowing just five hits and one earned run.
