UNC wins Game 1 of Super Regionals 5-2 over Stanford

CHAPEL HILL, NC– Patrick Johnson (13-1) combined with Michael Morin on a seven-hitter and lead No. 7-ranked North Carolina (49-14) to the series opening win of the Super Regional, 5-2 over No. 21-ranked Stanford (35-21) on Friday afternoon.

Johnson scattered five hits and allowed his first run since May 13, which included two post season starts, after 7.2 innings on Friday. He struck out seven and walked one. Loser Mark Appel (6-7) pitched into the seventh, giving up three runs, in what was a 1-0 game until the later innings.

UNC needs one more win to advance to its ninth College World Series. Stanford needs to win the next two.
