Quick Hits

  • If you would have bet me before the NCAA Tournament that the Fort Worth Regional final would be between Oral Roberts and Dallas Baptist, I would have told you that was crazy talk. The funny part is that this is the matchup we get after Oral Roberts ended the Horned Frogs season with an 8-4  victory in their first game of the day. The Golden Eagles then came back with a 7-2 win over Dallas Baptist to set up a winner take all game in Fort Worth at 7pm central time on Monday night.
  • The winner of that series will match up against the Houston Regional winner in the Super Regional round which features Baylor and Cal facing off on Monday also in a winner take all game. The Cal Bears set up the winner take all situation by defeating the host Rice Owls 6-3 before bouncing back with a dominating 8-0 victory over Baylor.
  • UConn blew a two run lead in the top of the ninth inning against Clemson but Ryan Fuller came up with a clutch two out RBI single to give the Huskies the 7-6 victory. Fuller talked about the hit saying “The 1-2 pitch was close. He set up outside and I definitely thought it broke outside. It was a close call. I just kept trying to get a good swing on it and I kept fouling pitches off. I finally hit on that got through. We wanted it so bad in our dugout. We definitely felt like we had momentum on our side and didn’t want to give it up.” The win puts Clemson and UConn both in a winner take all regional final on Monday. UConn defeated Coastal Carolina 12-6 earlier in the day to advance to the Regional Final.
  • The other big story of the day was the Cal-State Fullerton Titans losing to Big Ten champion Illinois 7-5 as the Fightin’ Illini scored six times in the final three innings to eliminate the Titans. Illinois advanced to the Regional Final against Stanford but ended up running out of quality pitching as they lost 14-2.
  • UC-Irvine scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to erase a 3-2 deficit to grab a 4-3 win over UCLA and advance to the Super Regionals against Virginia. Ronnie Shaeffer drove home the winning run with a single that scored Scott Gottschling from third base.
