2011 NCAA Austin Regional: Day 1 Recap

Here is your 2011 Austin Regional Recap for Day 1 of play.

Kent State 4 Texas State 2 (11 innings)

AUSTIN, Texas — Sophomore pinch hitterĀ Jason Bagoly (Austintown, Ohio) delivered the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 11th inning to push No. 3-seeded Kent State baseball team to a 4-2 triumph over No. 2-seeded Texas State today (June 3) in the opening game of the Austin Regional of the 2011 NCAA Championship at the University of Texas’s UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Ranked No. 24 in the nation according to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the Golden Flashes (44-15) won their first NCAA postseason game since eliminating then No. 24-ranked Cal Poly, 10-9, on May 30, 2009, at the Tempe Regional. Kent State advances to the regional semifinal Saturday (June 4) against the winner of this evening ‘s game between No.1-seeded Texas and No. 4-seeded Princeton. First pitch of Saturday’s matchup is 7:30 p.m. EST (6:30 p.m. CST). Texas State (40-22) will face the loser of tonight’s game in an elimination game tomorrow at 2 p.m. EST (1 p.m. CST).Ā  The winner of the first elimination game will square off with the loser of the Saturday nightcap in a second do-or-die contest Sunday (June 5) at 2 p.m. EST (1 p.m. CST). The regional championship game will be held that evening at 7:30 p.m. EST (6:30 p.m. CST). Should the remaining undefeated squad be dealt a loss in the regional final, a second game will be played Monday (June 6) at 2 p.m. EST (1 p.m. CST) to decide who advances to the NCAA Super Regionals next weekend (June 10-13).

#7 Texas 5 Princeton 3

AUSTIN, Texas ā€“ Junior left-handed pitcherĀ Sam Stafford put in one of the best efforts of his career to lead the No. 5 Texas Longhorns to a 5-3 win over the Princeton Tigers in NCAA Austin Regional action at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday night.

Stafford (6-2) yielded just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out six over 7.0 innings of work to earn the win. It matched the longest outing of his career, a 7.0-inning start at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on April 5, 2011.

The Longhorns manufactured a pair of runs without a hit in the bottom of the first inning.Ā Tant Shepherd drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt byĀ Mark Payton.Ā Brandon Loy followed with a walk and a double-steal put two runners in scoring position.Ā Erich Weiss bounced a grounder to second base to bring Shepherd home and Loy scored on a wild pitch to give Texas the 2-0 advantage.
