Conference USA Weekend Recap (May 13th-15th)

Several key series unfolded this weekend as Conference USA finished up its second to last weekend of conference play this season. Houston stole two from visiting Southern Miss, leaving the Golden Eagles with just a one-game lead in the conference standings at a 15-6 record. Right behind them is Rice, who, with their series victory over visiting Memphis, improved to 14-7 in conference play. UCF solidified their spot in the Conference USA tournament, jumping up to a tie for fifth place after sweeping UAB in Birmingham over the weekend. Tied with UCF (as well as with Memphis) is Tulane, who were able to scrape together two wins in West Virginia, as they played an unconventionally scheduled three game set against Marshall. ECU absolutely destroyed visiting Delaware State, taking all three from the MEAC team by an average margin of just over eleven runs per game. Read the rest of this entry »
Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (May 13th-May 15th)

With the second to last weekend of MVC play in the books, Creighton has a one game lead in the standings thanks to two wins over the weekend at Evansville. Missouri State jumped into second place thanks to their second straight series victory, this time in a sweep over visiting Bradley. Wichita State dropped to third despite taking two of three from Indiana State at home, while Illinois State secured sole possession in the battle for fourth place on the road at Southern Illinois. 2011 Division 2 Baseball Brackets Announced
INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Division II Baseball Committee has selected the 48 teams that will participate in the 2011 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship.
The championship provides for eight regional sites – six sites will host six teams, the West region will host four teams and the South region will host eight teams. All regionals are double-elimination tournaments and will be played at on-campus sites May 19-23. Regional champions will advance to the double-elimination championship finals May 28-June 4 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Sophomore Mike Zunino (Cape Coral, Fla.) delivered a three-run homer in the 12th to lift No. 5 Florida (39-13/20-7 SEC) over No. 2 Vanderbilt (42-8/20-7 SEC), 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field. With the dramatic victory, the Gators are now locked into a three-way tie for the league lead with the Commodores and No. 3 South Carolina (41-11/20-7 SEC) entering the final weekend of the regular season. UF will host Kentucky (24-28/7-20 SEC) starting on Thursday night at McKethan Stadium, while the Gamecocks finish at Alabama (31-22/13-14 SEC) and Vanderbilt travels to Georgia (26-26/15-12 SEC). CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Will Roberts (Jr., Richmond, Va.) worked into the eighth inning in an outstanding pitching performance, and the No. 1-ranked Virginia baseball team scored four runs in the seventh inning in a 5-4 victory over No. 16 Miami Sunday afternoon in front of a season-high 4,700 fans at Davenport Field. Senior Josh Adams (Jacksonville, Fla.) cranked a game-tying homer to begin the ninth and senior Bryson Smith (Watkinsville, Ga.) snapped an 0-for-16 drought with an RBI double as No. 5 Florida (38-12/19-6 SEC) edged No. 2 Vanderbilt (41-7/19-6 SEC), 6-5, in the completion of Friday night’s suspended contest at Hawkins Field on Saturday afternoon. Nashville, Tenn, – Friday night’s game between Vanderbilt and Florida has been suspended due to rain with the Commodores leading 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Friday night’s game will resume at 1 p.m. at Hawkins Field and the teams will finish the full nine innings. Saturday’s scheduled game will begin 40 minutes after the completion of the suspended game.
