Conference USA Weekend Preview (May 19th-21st)

By: John Lockwood

Although the field is set for the 2011 Conference USA tournament to be held in Pearl, MS in two weeks, the battle for the CUSA regular season championship will be decided 80 miles down US-49 in Hattiesburg as the second-place Rice Owls take on first-place Southern Miss. Rice comes into this weekend one game behind the Golden Eagles in the standings, but both teams are guaranteed the top two seeds come May 25th. Spots three through seven are wide open however, as East Carolina and Houston both share 11-10 records while Tulane, UCF and Memphis all come in to the weekend at 10-11. UAB, who finished up their conference schedule last weekend by being swept by UCF, has the unfortunate distinction of playing the #1 seed in the 2011 Conference USA Baseball Championship presented by Trustmark. Marshall, after losing their series to Tulane, is the odd-man out. Nationally, although they are in second-place in CUSA, Rice climbs two spots this week to #17, while their first-place opponent this weekend drops to #20 after dropping their series on the road at Houston. Back in the top 30 as well is East Carolina, at #30, after going a perfect 4-0 last weekend. Read the rest of this entry »

Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Preview (May 19th-21st)

By: John Lockwood
The final week of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season is upon us, but things are far from set in stone as four teams sit within two games of each other at the top of the standings. The conference schedulers really did save the best for last, as first-place Creighton will host second-place Missouri State in a series that could decide the MVC regular season champions. “Could” is the operative word in that sentence, as Wichita State—with a sweep over last-place Bradley this weekend—could (see scenarios below) find themselves atop the standings to end the season for the second year in a row. Illinois State, currently in fourth, will hope to improve their seed for the conference tournament as they host Evansville, who will be looking to crack into the top half of the standings after dropping their last two MVC series. Southern Illinois, who commands a 9-9 record despite holding the worst overall record in the conference, will head on the road to finish the season against Indiana State. To allow an extra day before the State Farm MVC Baseball Championship starts next Tuesday, this week’s games will start Thursday. Read the rest of this entry »
