Conference USA Weekend Recap (May 19th-21st)

The Rice Owls and Southern Miss Golden Eagles are Conference USA Regular Season co-Champions for 2011. #17 Rice stormed into Hattiesburg, MS this weekend and took two of three from #20 Southern Miss to take a share of the league title in advance of the upcoming CUSA Championship Tournament to start Tuesday in Pearl, MS. It was the first time in Conference USA’s 16-year history that regular season co-champions have been crowned, and while it was the second consecutive regular season title for the Owls, it was the first for the Golden Eagles since 2003. Elsewhere in conference play, #30 ECU swept Tulane to secure the #3 spot in the CUSA tournament, Memphis took two of three from visiting Houston and UCF took two of three from Marshall. UAB split two games on the road against Utah to finish their regular season schedule. The Conference Tournament starts Wednesday morning at Trustmark Park in Pearl, MS. SEC Recap for May 21st

Here is your SEC Recap for May 21st.

#2 South Carolina 3 Alabama 2

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – SEC CHAMPS!!! Second ranked South Carolina (44-12, 22-8 SEC) broke out of the gates with an early two-run lead and behind solid work from starter Colby Holmes and three relievers the Gamecocks defeated Alabama (32-24, 14-16) 3-2 on Saturday afternoon to claim at least a share of the SEC Championship. It is the school’s third SEC Championship in baseball and the first since the 2002 regular season. Carolina also claims at least a share of the SEC Eastern Division title, the school’s fifth (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2011). South Carolina heads to Hoover, Ala. for the SEC Tournament as the No. 1 seed and will face the No. 8 seed Auburn at 5:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday May 25 at Regions Park. Read the rest of this entry »

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 13 North Carolina capped off a three-game series sweep of top-ranked Virginia (44-12, 22-8 ACC) as the Tar Heels (44-12, 20-10 ACC) used a three-run fifth inning en route to a 3-2 win over the Cavaliers Saturday afternoon on senior day at Boshamer Stadium. Video of the Day: New Mexico Turns A Triple Play vs. No. 7 TCU

The New Mexico Lobos hosted No. 7 TCU at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, N.M. on Friday, May 20th and despite getting shelled 25-16, the Lobo defense turned a rare triple play in the game.  It was officially scored as a 1-2-5-4-5-4 in the top of the third and it was UNM’s first triple play since May 7th, 1989 against Wyoming.

Todd Raleigh out at Tennessee?

According to Jimmy Hyams of WNML-AM, Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh will be fired on Sunday after the Volunteers complete the 2011 season. It has been a tough season in Knoxville for the Volunteers as they are 24-29 while being a disappointing 6-22 in SEC play. SEC Recap for May 20th

Here is your SEC Recap for May 20th.

#2 South Carolina 6 Alabama 3

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – Christian Walker drove in three runs and Peter Mooney, Scott Wingo and Evan Marzilli were a combined 9-for-14 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI as second ranked South Carolina bounced back with a 6-3 win over Alabama on Friday evening in SEC baseball action. Carolina is 43-12 and 21-8 in the SEC, tied for first place with Florida and Vanderbilt going into the final day of action in league play. Alabama is 32-23 and 14-15 in the SEC. The rubber game of the series is set for 1 p.m. ET and will be televised live on CSS as well as on Time Warner Cable channel 506 in Columbia. It can also be heard on the Gamecock Radio Network. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman left-hander Kent Emanuel withstood the test from No. 1 Virginia (45-8, 22-7 ACC) Friday night and No. 13 Carolina (43-12, 19-10 ACC) picked up a pair of eighth-inning runs to claim a 2-1 victory over the Cavaliers. Carolina’s two and three hitters, Levi Michael and Colin Moran, each drove in a run in the go-ahead eighth inning. NCBWA Announces 2011 Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalists
