College Baseball Daily 2011 All-Big 12 Team/All-Freshman Team

With the end of the Big 12 regular season upon us, its time to look at the individual players that stood out at their respective positions. Some of the top players aren’t a surprise, but there are a few notable subtractions that would’ve been hard predictions before the season began, notably at third base where Nebraska junior Cody Asche held steady at the end to pass a hard-slumping Oklahoma junior Garrett Buechele, a preseason favorite for Player of the Year honors.

Texas A&M OF Tyler Naquin finished the season strong, claiming Player of the Year honors. The sophomore led the league in average, hits, and runs scored, while finishing among the top 10 in five other categories.  Read the rest of this entry »

2011 Conference USA Tournament Preview

By: John Lockwood

#17 Rice and #20 Southern Miss have finished the 2011 regular season as CUSA co-champions—the first time in Conference USA’s 16 year history that two teams will share the regular season title. With their series victory of the Golden Eagles this past weekend, the Rice Owls lengthened their streak of consecutive titles to 16 years, and earned the No.1 seed in this week’s CUSA Championship Tournament to be played in Pearl, MS. While the odds of Rice and Southern Miss (the No. 2 seed) receiving at-large bids to the NCAA tournament are high, for the other six teams in the field, a tournament championship is the only guarantee they’ll have for extending their season. Video of the Day: A Decade of Dominance – The Gary Ward Era

We offer up a history lesson on college baseball living legend Gary Ward courtesy of Oklahoma State University. The school posted a video two days ago which highlights Ward and his teams during the “Decade of Dominance” at Oklahoma State, a stretch that may never again be duplicated in college baseball. Ward authored one of the most dominant decades in all of college sports during the 80′s at Oklahoma State in which the Cowboys made seven consecutive trips to the College World Series (a feat that is still unmatched) and the team finished as the national runner ups three times during the decade.

Ward led OSU to 16 straight conference titles, 17 NCAA regional appearances and 10 trips to the College World Series. He compiled a record of 953-313-1 in 19 seasons in Stillwater. In 2002, he led New Mexico State to a Sun Belt Tournament Championship and an NCAA appearance. He finished with a career record of 1,022-361-1, which ranks 24th on the NCAA all-time wins list. He’s a member of two national college baseball Halls of Fame (College Baseball Foundation and ABCA) as well as the Hall of Fame at three different colleges (New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M) as well as the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

Elsewhere in the final series of conference play, Southern Illinois took two of three from Indiana State, solidifying fifth-place in the conference tournament, which starts Tuesday at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.
