MESA, AZ – The Western Athletic Conference today released its 2011 all-WAC baseball teams and postseason awards as selected by the league’s head coaches. Fresno State junior outfielder Dusty Robinson was named the Player of the Year and Fresno State senior Greg Gonzalez earned Pitcher of the Year honors. The Freshman of the Year award went to Fresno State outfielder Aaron Judge. Hawai‘i’s Mike Trapasso was named WAC Coach of the Year.

Stony Brook Seeks To Repeat In America East Tournament
Boasting a program best 41 wins this season, Stony Brook will look to defend their America East Baseball Championship as play in the conference tournament begins late Wednesday morning.
The tournament will open with match ups that look quite familiar to the teams involved, as they are all rematches of last weekends season ending series. Regular season champion Stony Brook (41-10 overall, 22-2 America East) will face fourth seeded Albany (19-29, 11-11) at 3pm. The Seawolves swept the Great Danes in their four game series this past weekend, amassing 29 runs and holding Albany to a mere eight. America East Pitcher of the Year Nick Tropeano carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning in the series’ first game, and has a program record 11 wins this season. The SEC Tournament starts today in Hoover, Alabama. The town of Hoover really does this thing right—each team stays in the Wynfrey Hotel, which is connected to the Riverchase Galleria Mall. We have easy access to food, a mall and a pool. We also get police escorts to and from each game at Regions Park, the Birmingham Barons AA stadium. Tulane’s Rick Jones Reprimanded by C-USA
Tulane head baseball coach Rick Jones has been reprimanded for comments he made on his weekly radio show about the Marshall Athletic Department. On May 13th, the Green Wave were slated to play a single game against Marshall as they started their C-USA series with Marshall. The Marshall Athletic Department decided to move up Saturday’s game with permission from C-USA officials to play a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Sunday with an impending rain storm coming for Saturday. Team with something to prove – As the ACC Tournament opens Virginia is considered virtually a lock for a top-8 national seed. But following a sweep in Chapel Hill last week and an OK performance against Miami the previous weekend, there are some doubters. Southern Miss Suspensions Announced
Southern Miss pitchers Geoffrey Thomas and Johnathan Thompson have been suspended after being declared academically ineligible.
According to Southern Miss sports information director Jack Duggan, Thompson won’t be playing as long as the Eagles are playing this summer while Thomas is just temporary unavailable over these academic issues. Akron’s Pat Bangtson Resigns

Akron head baseball coach Pat Bangtson has resigned after six years with the school. This past season, he went 16-37 overall record and a 7-20 mark in Mid-American Conference play. It was a tough year for the Zips as they lost 15 one run games including 11 in conference play. His six year record at the school was a disappointing 119-188. Read the rest of this entry »
NCBWA Names Pro-Line Athletic National Players of the Week (May 24th)

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 22 today. UT San Antonio senior first baseman Ryan Hutson and Louisville junior second baseman Ryan Wright were named National Co-Hitters of the Week, while Cal State Bakersfield senior right-hander Mike McCarthy was named National Pitcher of the Week. SEC Announces 2011 Baseball Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Florida catcher Mike Zunino was selected 2011 SEC Baseball Player of the Year, Grayson Garvin of Vanderbilt was named SEC Pitcher of the Year and Vanderbilt outfielder Tony Kemp was named SEC Freshman of the Year by a vote of the league’s 12 head baseball coaches.
