CBD Journal with Ray Ricker (May 3rd)

This season has never really caught a rhythm with all of the rainouts and cancellations of games but we are right at the finish line of the regular season. It seems as a short while ago I was writing about our indoor practices and a season full of optimism. Good thing for us we have had a pretty successful year on the diamond and it makes you not want to stop playing for a very long time. We have one game left in the regular season versus a very good UMass-Lowell team who we played earlier in the week and lost on a dramatic walk off homerun. Read the rest of this entry »

CBD Journal with Western Illinois (May 3rd)

Due to the facilities at Southern Utah I was able to be in the dugout instead of a press box. It was an interesting perspective to say the least. It was an important series just like every other Summit League series. The Leathernecks played extremely well and everybody contributed on some level. The Purple & Gold outscored the Thunderbirds 44-17 and ended two of the games early in seven innings. Dating back to last season, Western Illinois has ended three out of the last four games against Southern Utah early. Read the rest of this entry »

Conference USA Weekend Recap (April 29th-May 1st)

By: John Lockwood

This weekend in CUSA play was full of surprises, each one more unsuspecting than the next. The biggest—by far—came from Memphis, TN, where the best-hitting team in the conference (with the nation’s leading hitter) was outscored 20-4 in game two of their series against last-place Marshall, a series which the Herd took two of three from on the road. In Greenville, NC, as expected there were some terrific pitching performances in a series which involved the country’s top pitching staff—however they did not come from the nation’s top pitching team. In New Orleans—in the only series on the weekend which the home-team won—a team which has been plagued by injuries to its pitching staff outdueled one of the best pitching teams in the conference. And lastly, in Orlando, Conference USA’s worst-pitching team rallied behind the best pitching performance on the weekend to take it’s series from a team with the reigning CUSA/Louisville Slugger/ NCBWA National Hitter of the Week. Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (April 29th-May 1st)

By: John Lockwood

With more than half the teams of the Missouri Valley heading into Friday within one game of each other for first place, this weekend’s series gave some teams the chance to distance themselves from the rest of the pack in the conference standings. Creighton (30-10, 8-3) did just that, taking all three from a visiting Bradley (20-21, 2-9) at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, and putting themselves into sole possession of first with their 8-3 conference record. While in any other season I would have said that Southern Illinois (16-27, 7-5) would just be hoping to survive their series against a visiting Wichita State (28-19, 7-5), this year it was SIU who was ahead in the standings. However, the Shockers still took two of three from the Salukis, evening up both teams at 7-5 records—good for second place in the conference. Tied with them is Illinois State (26-13, 6-5), whose crowing of new all-time wins and saves leaders during their series win over visiting Indiana State (22-19, 4-7) brings to light their recent emergence as the best pitching team in the MVC. Right behind the Redbirds, Salukis and Shockers, in third place, is Missouri State (24-17, 6-5) who dropped two of two at Evansville (24-15, 5-6), as a resurgent Purple Aces team attempts to make a second-half run in the conference standings.
