WHAT DID WE SEE?
- I personally took in the NC State and Boston College matchup in Chestnut Hill. The Wolfpack picked up the 10-0 victory behind eight shutout innings from Cory Mazzoni who struck out 11 batters while limiting the Eagles to three hits and did not surrender a walk. I was not expecting Mazzoni to be so outstanding on the day as he touched 96 on his fastball while the BC offense couldn’t touch him at all. It should be interesting to see where Mazzoni goes in the upcoming MLB draft.
CBD QUICK HITS
- The most ridiculous score of the day goes to the TCU-New Mexico matchup. The Horned Frogs picked up the 25-16 victory as the two teams combined for 47 hits, eight errors, and 13 walks. The leading hitter for the Horned Frogs was Jantzen Witte who went 6-7 with an RBI while scoring four runs. DJ Patterson led the New Mexico offense by going 5-6 with six RBI and three runs scored.
- Virginia picked up their second straight loss to North Carolina on Friday 2-1 as they had a two run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning against Danny Hultzen. UNC starter Kent Emanuel went six innings giving up two hits and one run but got the no decision. RC Orlan got out of a jam in the top of the eighth inning by pitching 0.2 innings and get the win for his first of the season. Hultzen picked up the loss as he went 7.2 innings giving up four hits and two runs while striking out 10.
- Cal-State Bakersfield RHP Mike McCarthy pitched a four hit complete game shutout as the Roadrunners picked up the 6-0 victory over Fresno State. He struck out 12 batters while walking two. The news was not all bad for the Bulldogs as they clinched the WAC Championship with Hawaii’s 18-8 loss to New Mexico State.
- The Kentucky Wildcats picked up their first SEC road win of the year by dismantling the Florida Gators 14-1 on Friday night. the offense was led by Neiko Johnson who collected a career-high four RBI and four runs scored on a 3-for-5 game. Black finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, with Wright batting 3-for-5 with three RBI. Braden Kapteyn totaled a 2-for-5 game, with J.T. Riddle, Lucas Witt and Matt Reida also collecting hits. Alex Meyer did not disappoint as he went seven strong innings, allowing only five hits and one run, walking three and striking out nine.
- The loss by the Gators was key as both Vanderbilt and South Carolina picked up wins to set up a three way tie in the SEC Eastern Division for the divisional title and the number 1 seed for the SEC Tournament. The Commodores started out slow but ended up coming out with a 9-3 victory over the Bulldogs. Vanderbilt starter Grayson Garvin only went 2.2 innings giving up four hits and three runs while walking five batters. TJ Pecoraro was able to pick him up by pitching 3.1 shutout innings and get the victory. Forrest Koumas went five innings giving up on run on five hits and striking out six to continue his perfect start to the season at 6-0 in a 6-3 victory over Alabama. Peter Mooney and Scott Wingo each went 3-4 to lead the Gamecocks.
- Congrats to Illinois-Chicago for winning a share of the Horizon League title with Wright State as both teams finished with 16-4 conference records. It is the Flames tenth time in the last eleven seasons that they have won at least a share of the conference regular season title. The conference title is the second straight for Wright State and their sixth conference title in school history.
