Here is your ACC Recap for May 19th.

#14 North Carolina 6 #1 Virginia 0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – As was expected a pitcher’s duel broke out Thursday evening at Boshamer Stadium as No. 1 Virginia’s (45-7, 22-6 ACC) Cody Winiarski and North Carolina’s (42-12, 18-10 ACC) Patrick Johnson twirled five innings of shutout ball. Winiarksi would be the first to buckle as the Tar Heels exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to take the lead and Patrick Johnson went on to throw the first complete game shutout by a Tar Heel since Alex White in 2009 as he improved to 10-1 on the year.

Johnson also joined Adam Warren as the most recent Tar Heel to post 10 wins in a season as Warren went 10-2 in his senior year for Carolina.

On the night, Johnson allowed just four hits, did not walk a batter and retired nine Wahoos via the strikeout. The nine strikeouts moves Johnson into fifth place in the Carolina career record books with 280.

#6 Florida State 8 #12 Clemson 6

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sean Gilmartin knew he was in for a battle Thursday night against Clemson, the ACC’s top-hitting offense. Florida State’s junior staff ace, however, didn’t think he would be putting his season on the line.

That’s what nearly happened on the second pitch of the game, when Clemson leadoff batter John Hinson lined a pitch back through the middle which struck Gilmartin flush, two inches below the left collarbone.

Gilmartin had the presence to pick up the ball and retire Hinson at first, before checking to see that his prized left arm and shoulder were still functioning.

#15 Georgia Tech 11 Virginia Tech 4

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior Jacob Esch recorded four hits to lead No. 8 Georgia Tech (38-16, 21-7 ACC) to an 11-4 series-opening win over Virginia Tech (29-24, 10-18 ACC) Thursday night at English Field.

Esch’s four hits tied a career high, and came as apart of a 14-hit attack from the Jackets. Eight of Tech’s nine starters recorded at least one hit, while junior Jake Davies, sophomore Sam Dove and freshman Zane Evans each chipped in with two base-knocks.

Junior Mark Pope (11-3) earned the win on the mound, scattering three runs (two earned) on seven hits over seven innings. He issued a career-high four walks, but recorded seven strikeouts on the night.

#23 Miami, Florida 4 Duke 1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 15th-ranked Miami Hurricanes received another strong pitching performance from freshman Bryan Radziewski to take the series opener from Duke, 4-1, on Thursday night at Alex Rodriguez Park.

With the win, the Hurricanes improved to 33-19 overall (18-9 Atlantic Coast Conference), while the Blue Devils of Duke dropped to 25-29 (6-22 ACC).

Radziewski (9-2, 2.94 ERA) – coming off a win over No. 1 Virginia last Friday – won his third straight start, working seven effective innings to defeat Duke. The freshman lefty gave up one run, surrendering only four hits and one walk on the night.

NC State 9 Boston College 4

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Brett Williams had four hits Thursday, Harold Riggins drove in three runs, and Ethan Ogburn took a shutout into the sixth to lift NC State past Boston College 9-4 at Shea Field.

The game was the first of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series, and the victory lifted the Wolfpack to 31-23 overall and 13-15 in the ACC. NC State has won three games in a row and five of its last seven. Boston College dropped to 17-31 overall and 7-20 in the conference.

NC State actually won twice Thursday, beating both the Eagles and the weatherman, who called for rain and said the game might not be played at all. The final three innings did take place in a steady to heavy downpour, but the Wolfpack took control of the game early, scoring four in the first inning and two more in the second. The rain started in the seventh and the only question after that was whether the game would be suspended as a green, yellow and red blob crawled across the local radar screen towards Chestnut Hill.
