#11 North Carolina 4 UNC-Asheville 2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior right-hander Bryant Gaines threw six innings of two-run ball and No. 9 North Carolina (39-10) scored a pair of runs in the final two innings to post a 4-2 victory over visiting UNC Asheville (15-30) Wednesday night at Boshamer Stadium. Ben Bunting went 2-for-4 and scored the game-winning win for the Tar Heels who have won eight straight games for the third time this season.

UNC Asheville’s Patrick Koontz hit a pair of solo home runs that put the Bulldogs in front in both the second and fourth innings but the Tar Heels were able to battle back on both occasions to knot up the score.

Following Koontz’s second inning home run the Tar Heels loaded the bases in the bottom of the third on three free passes from UNCA starter Dillon Tabar.

#13 Clemson 8 East Tennessee State 3

Clemson, SC – John Hinson, Phil Pohl, and Brad Miller, the Tigers’ 1-2-3 batters in the lineup, combined to go 9-for-12 with four RBIs and five runs in #16 Clemson’s 8-3 victory over East Tennessee State in front of 1,421 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Wednesday night. The Tigers, who won their sixth game in a row, improved to 34-15, while the Buccaneers dropped to 31-17. It was the first meeting between the two since 2003.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two first-inning runs, then Clemson added four more runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead. The Buccaneers scored single runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings, but they could not put together a big inning or take advantage of three Clemson errors.

NC State 10 Campbell 2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Pratt Maynard tied his career high with four hits, and righthanders Vance Williams and Josh Easley combined on a five-hitter Wednesday night as NC State cruised past Campbell 10-2 at Taylor Field.

NC State improved to 28-21 with the win, while Campbell fell to 16-31 with the loss.

Williams (2-0) started and pitched the first 5 1/3 innings, allowing all five Campbell hits and both runs. Williams walked one and struck out four. Easely worked the last 3 2/3 innings and retired all 11 men he faced, seven of them on strikes, to notch his first collegiate save. The seven strikeouts marked a career high for Easley. Campbell’s lone run came on a one-out two-run homer by Ellis Lowe in the bottom of the third inning. The Camels did not have a hit after Ben Fish’s one-out single in the fourth.
