#3 Virginia 14 VCU 3

RICHMOND, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team headed into its exam break on a high note with a 14-3 road victory over VCU on a beautiful Tuesday evening at The Diamond in Richmond, Va. A crowd of 5,421 attended the game, marking the largest crowd for a college baseball game in Virginia state history.

The heart of the Cavaliers’ order had a big night, going 6-for-11 with nine runs scored and five RBI. Jared King (Jr., Radford,Va.) went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI out of the six-hole, while Kenny Swab (Sr., Kernersville, N.C.) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Cleanup hitter Steven Proscia (Jr., Suffern, N.Y.) homered, drove in a pair and scored twice. The Cavaliers finished with 17 hits, one shy of a season high.

#7 Florida State 8 Jacksonville 5

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Robert Benincasa has been looking for a sign; something positive to validate his sizeable skill-set. Florida State’s sophomore right-hander found it at the most opportune time Tuesday night at Jacksonville.

On in relief of starter David Trexler in the second inning, Benincasa struck out a career-high six in a season-best five innings to keep the sixth-ranked Seminoles in the game.

FSU capped a late rally with a three-run ninth, highlighted by Justin Gonzalez’s towering two-run homer, to defeat the Dolphins 8-5 at John Sessions Stadium.

#13 North Carolina 8 Gardner-Webb 1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 12 North Carolina struggled to find a hit through the first six innings before erupting for a seven-run seventh inning en route to a 8-1 win over Gardner-Webb (28-14-1) Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Chris Munnelly notched the win throwing 5.1 innings of shutout ball. UNC returns to action Friday when it hosts Maryland in an ACC series in Chapel Hill.

After a six-day layoff the Tar Heel bats struggled to get going Tuesday as the Gardner-Webb duo of Erik Heiligenstadt and Brock Wilson combined for six straight no-hit innings.

The Tar Heels were retired in order through the first three innings before Levi Michael was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Towson 10 Maryland 6

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior rightfielder Steve Rice continued his hot hitting as he banged out two hits, scored two runs, stole two bases and drove in a pair of runs as the Tigers (21-21-1) dealt the University of Maryland (20-28) a 10-6 non-conference loss at Shipley Field on Tuesday evening,

Towson and Maryland will play the second game of their two-game home-and-home series on Wednesday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park at 3:00 p.m.

For the Tigers, it marked their 15 win in their last 20 games. The Tigers, who had a 6-16-1 record on March 26, evened their record at 21-21-1.
