Here is your SEC Recap for April 16th

#1 Vanderbilt 6 #3 South Carolina 4

Columbia, S.C. – Top-ranked Vanderbilt held off third-ranked South Carolina 6-4 Saturday night at a sold-out Carolina Stadium to even the series at one game apiece.

The Commodores jumped out to an early lead scoring one run in each of the first two innings before the Gamecocks put three runs on the board in the bottom of the second to grab the lead. Jason Esposito’s solo home run to right field tied the game in the fourth inning and the Dores took control of the game in the fifth pushing three runs across. RBI-singles from Anthony Gomez and Aaron Westlake scored the first two runs with Mike Yastrzemski’s bases loaded walk scoring the third run. Read the rest of this entry »

RALEIGH, N.C. — Brett Williams and Cameron Conner drove in runs in the seventh and eighth innings Saturday, and NC State took advantage of three North Carolina errors to defeat the fifth-ranked Tar Heels 8-7 in the second game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Doak Field at Dail Park. #3 South Carolina 3 #1 Vanderbilt 1

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina junior left-hander Michael Roth improved to 8-1 on the year as he limited top ranked Vanderbilt to just one run on three hits as the third ranked Gamecocks upended the Commodores 3-1 on Friday evening in the first of a three-game SEC baseball series. The game was played in front of a packed house at Carolina Stadium, 8,242 fans, the fifth sellout of the season. South Carolina is 27-6 and 11-2 in the SEC while the loss drops Vanderbilt to 31-4 and 10-3 in league play. Read the rest of this entry »

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Danny Hultzen (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) became Virginia’s all-time wins leader as the top-ranked Cavaliers blanked Duke, 10-0, Friday evening in front of 3,550 fans at Davenport Field. Virginia (34-3, 14-2 ACC) recorded its 11th shutout of the season, tying the Atlantic Coast Conference single-season record, previously set by the 1977 Clemson and 2005 Virginia teams. Ten Minutes With Capital One Cup’s Robin Ventura

As the record holder of the longest hitting streak in college baseball history (58 games, held for nearly 24 years and counting) and a member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s first class, former Oklahoma State Cowboy Robin Ventura has always been heavily involved in college baseball. This season, Ventura is even more heavily entrenched, adding his work as the baseball ambassador for the inaugural Capital One Cup to his plate. The Capital One Cup honors the country’s top men’s and women’s collegiate programs across 13 different sports, honoring the winning schools with $200,000, money earmarked for athletes looking to go on to graduate school.

SEC Weekend Preview (April 15th-17th)

The SEC enters the fifth weekend of conference play with the big matchup taking place in Columbia SC between the Vanderbilt Commodores and the South Carolina Gamecocks. Vanderbilt enters the series as the number 1 team in the country while South Carolina is number 3. The other series sees Auburn heading to LSU, Florida facing Georgia, Mississippi State at Arkansas, Kentucky at Ole Miss, and Alabama facing off against Tennessee in the Thursday-Saturday series in which Alabama won the first game on Thursday night. ACC Weekend Preview (April 15th-17th)

The ACC opens up the second half of the conference series this weekend with five different squads showing up in the latest NCBWA rankings while a sixth team in Miami is in the also receiving vote category.

Leading the ACC Atlantic Division is still the Florida State Seminoles who have a 9-6 conference record. Boston College is in second place with a 6-8 mark while Clemson is a half game behind them at 6-9. Both NC State and Wake Forest are 5-10 in conference play and Maryland is rouding out the division with a 3-12 mark. Read the rest of this entry »

Conference USA Weekend Preview (April 15th-17th)

This weekend marks the fourth series in Conference USA play as teams look to improve their positions before entering the mid-way point of the conference season. Thus far, UAB, Southern Miss and Rice all hold 6-3 records, and with it first place in the standings. Houston holds the same .667 winning percentage, but at 4-2. Nationally, Rice remains at #22 after a 2-2 week which included a 2-0 shutout of #7 Texas A&M, while Southern Miss falls to #29 after almost being swept by Memphis over the weekend. Of note, Tigers shortstop Chad Zurcher leads the nation in hitting at .519, thirty-four points higher that C.J. Cron of Utah.  Read the rest of this entry »

UGA’s Johnathan Taylor Injury Update

Georgia’s Johnathan Taylor fractured his C5 and C6 vertebrae in a collision in the outfield against Florida State back on March 6th.  An update was given on his condition on Thuesday, in which he remains paralyzed below the waist.  The Atlanta Journal Constitution checked in states there are positives to the story.  Like the fact that his medical expenses are going to be covered for the next 30 years, and the fact that he has progressed well enough over the last five weeks to be able to move his shoulders and arms as well as manually use a motorized wheelchair.  Another positive part of the story, the Bulldogs have rallied and gone 15-8 since the injury, as well as the Jonathan Taylor Fund being established.

Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Preview (April 15th-17th)

After a very exciting first week of Missouri Valley Conference play, the red hot Salukis of Southern Illinois sit atop the conference (at least for the time being) with a spotless 3-0 record after sweeping Evansville last weekend. Creighton, Indiana State and Missouri State are all tied for second with 2-1 conference records. The mid-week was not particularly kind to the teams of the Valley however, as the MVC posted a combined record of 3-7 on Tuesday and Wednesday. As well, in the four games against SEC/Big 12 teams, the conference was just 1-3—with the lone win coming in Creighton’s 7-6 walk-off finish against Kansas State. Read the rest of this entry »
