NCBWA Division 1 Poll – April 18, 2011

DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 14th year with its 2011 weekly surveys. Polls will be circulated from Feb. 21-June 28 following the 65th annual NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., at the new TD Ameritade Stadium.

To date, TCU, UCLA, Florida, Vanderbilt, and Virginia have held the No. 1 NCBWA rankings in ’11.

Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (April 15th-17th)

This weekend’s MVC action aimed to please the fan no matter what their disposition. If they were looking for an offensive display, they need look no further than Wichita, KS, where three Shockers players combined for 21 runs batted in—more than any other TEAM put up on the weekend. If they were looking for good pitching, they had to look no further than Peoria where Illinois State pitchers compiled a dumbfounding 26 strikeouts against Bradley hitters—on Saturday alone. The end result: Creighton sits atop the conference with 5-1 record, while Illinois State, Missouri State and Southern Illinois all sit in second with records of 4-2. Read the rest of this entry »

Conference USA Weekend Recap (April 15th-17th)

Another weekend of Conference USA play is in the books and with it a more definitive (or perhaps clouded as ever, depending on your point of view) picture of the conference standings. CBD Exclusive with Mike Gustafson

We caught up with College Baseball Foundation Executive Director Mike Gustafson in Austin, Texas. The College Baseball Foundation founded the College Baseball Hall of Fame, and is in the fundraising stage to build a permanent structure in Lubbock, Texas. Currently, Gustafson splits time with the Foundation and doing color commentary for Texas Tech’s radio broadcast. He spoke with us about the progress that has been made in the fundraising spectrum, as well as the processes they have undertaken to ensure the success of the Hall of Fame. 2011 CBD Mid-Major Poll (April 18th)

Fresno St (25-5) did not stay out of the #1 spot for very long.  Fresno St won all 3 games from Nevada this weekend to move into the top spot……..Troy (26-9) did not hold the top spot long.  Troy had a rough week this week going 1-3 and dropped to #6.  The Trojans dropped a mid week game at Jacksonville St before losing 2 of 3 at MTSU in Sunbelt play. COLUMBIA, S.C. – Trailing by a pair of runs, third ranked South Carolina batted around in the seventh inning and scored four times to rally for a 5-3 victory over top ranked Vanderbilt to clinch a weekend SEC baseball series. The Gamecocks are 28-7 and 12-3 in the SEC while Vanderbilt drops to 32-5 and 11-4 in conference play. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 1-ranked Virginia baseball team swept a doubleheader with Duke Sunday at Davenport Field, winning a 3-2, 11-inning nailbiter in the opener before rolling to an 18-4 victory in the nightcap. In earning its sixth straight ACC series win and fourth conference weekend sweep, Virginia improved to 36-3 overall and 16-2 in the ACC, while Duke fell to 20-19, 4-14 in the conference. MSU’s Brent Brownlee “flips off” fans at Arkansas

Coach Cohen has announced that Brownlee’s suspension will be only one game as his misses the Bulldogs matchup against Ole Miss on Tuesday night.

Mississippi State’s Brent Brownlee gave the middle finger to Arkansas fans after catching the final out of the Bulldogs 5-3 victory over Arkansas. Brownlee was promptly suspended indefinitely by Mississippi State head coach John Cohen and the length of the suspension is expected to be announced on Monday.
