CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Will Roberts (Jr., Richmond, Va.) followed up his perfect-game outing with seven innings of shutout pitching as he led the top-ranked Virginia baseball team to a 2-0 win over Radford Tuesday evening on Throwback Night at Davenport Field. College Baseball Foundation Creates New Award To Honor Umpires

The College Baseball Foundation announced today the creation of its newest award – the National Collegiate Umpire Award – honoring lifetime excellence in umpiring. The award, sponsored by Honig’s Whistle Stop, a provider of umpire gear, will be presented as part of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on July 3. CBD Journal with Drew Fann (April 5th)
After starting the week with a 10-3 victory over UT-Martin, we packed the charter bus on Thursday and headed to The Plains of Auburn, Alabama for a three-game series. Each of the games was close until the later innings, when we were able to string together some clutch hitting to distance ourselves from the Tigers and win all three games. College Baseball Daily Midseason All-Big 12 Team
Roughly one half of the way through the season, and there are a few players starting to distance themselves from the pack already. We compiled a list of the best players at their respective positions, and surprisingly discovered that only four players were on our Preseason All-Big 12 team. The midseason team features a pair of freshmen (David Paiz and Corey Knebel) and three transfers (Zach Johnson, Kelby Tomlinson, and Evan Mistich) among the returning veterans. CBD Journal with Western Illinois (April 5th)
I thought last weekend’s series against Bradley was a disappointment. We got another solid pitching performance from Dan Russell on Friday night which we let go to waste because we couldn’t find a way to put runs on the board. Saturday, Zach Sterling went out and dealt and got us the win. Sunday was probably our worst game of the year. It’s hard to win when you give teams 5 outs an inning, walk batters, and don’t capitalize at the plate with runners in scoring position. Read the rest of this entry »

Missouri Valley Conference Weekend Recap (April 1st-3rd)

With the last weekend before conference play in the books, Creighton (20-5), Illinois State (19-7), and Bradley (17-8), sit atop the MVC standings with only their midweek matchups to prepare them for next weekend. Noticeably, Wichita State (18-11) has dropped out of the top-3 and now sits in fifth place behind Evansville (15-9). DALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 14th year with its 2011 weekly surveys. Polls will be circulated from Feb. 21-June 28 following the 65th annual NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., at the new TD Ameritade Stadium.
Conference USA Weekend Recap (April 1st-3rd)

Conference USA’s second weekend of conference play was marked by impressive performances by the top three teams, with each sweeping their series. Houston (15-14, 3-0) sits atop the standings after a series sweep of Tulane (18-10, 1-5), #28 Southern Miss (22-5, 5-1) is in second after taking all three at UCF (19-9,2-4), and #25 Rice finished the trifecta by blanking Marshall (10-16, 1-5). Elsewhere in conference play UAB (16-11, 4-2) took two from ECU (20-7, 3-3) while Memphis (16-11, 1-2) completed a non-conference sweep of visiting Alcorn St. Read the rest of this entry »
