ATLANTA – The No. 1-ranked Virginia baseball team piled up 15 hits in scoring a 12-9 win over No. 8 Georgia Tech Saturday evening in front of 3,025 at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta. In winning its 12th straight game and 11th consecutive road contest, Virginia (31-2, 13-1 ACC) clinched the series with Georgia Tech (23-9, 11-3) and will go for the series sweep at noon Sunday.
In a night full of offensive fireworks, the relief effort of right-hander Justin Thompson(Jr., Danville, Va.) loomed larger. Inserted with the bases loaded and three runs in during the fifth inning, Thompson (2-0) shut the Yellow Jackets down until the ninth inning and worked 4.1 innings while striking out eight – both career highs – as he earned the win. He allowed his first earned runs in 20.2 innings in the ninth inning.
Georgia Tech starter Jed Bradley (3-1) worked 4.2 innings, allowing a season-high seven earned runs, eight hits and two walks while striking out five in taking the loss. The Yellow Jackets used seven pitchers in the contest. UVa starter Tyler Wilson (Sr., Midlothian, Va.) pitched 4.1 innings, giving up five earned runs, five hits and four walks while fanning one.

#10 North Carolina 8 #9 Florida State 5
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On a night that saw No. 7 North Carolina’s three through nine hitters score a combined eight runs and 5.2 innings of shutout ball from the bullpen the Tar Heels evened their series with No. 6 Florida State (23-8, 9-5 ACC) Saturday night with an 8-5 win. Shane Taylor threw a career-long four innings out of the pen not allowing a run keeping Carolina in the contest.
Carolina fell behind for the 10th straight game as the Seminoles struck for a pair of runs on four hits in the bottom of the very first inning. Florida State used a sacrifice fly and an opposite field single that drew chalk from the left field line.
The Tar Heels bounced right back in the top of the second pushing three runs across and taking the lead. Jesse Wierzbicki started things off by tripling off the right center field wall before back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Seth Baldwin.
Clemson, SC – Righthanders Scott Firth and David Haselden combined for a three-hit shutout in Clemson’s 7-0 victory over Maryland in front of 5,074 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday night. The Tigers, who took a 2-0 series lead, improved to 18-12 overall and 6-8 in the ACC. Clemson also won its 10th home game in a row. The Terrapins fell to 14-17 overall and 2-12 in ACC play.
Firth (3-0) earned the win by tossing 6.0 scoreless innings of two-hit ball. He also yielded four walks with five strikeouts. David Haselden registered his second save of the year by pitching 3.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Eric Potter (2-4), the first of three Maryland hurlers, suffered the loss. He gave up two hits, four runs, and one walk in 0.1 innings pitched.
DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Matt McGovern drove in four of the five Boston College runs and senior John Leonard allowed three runs through 7.0 innings to lead the baseball team to a 5-3 win against Duke Saturday afternoon at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
McGovern had career highs in hits and RBIs as he went 4-for-5 with a triple while driving in four runs. Leonard picked up his fourth win of the year after tossing 7.0 innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits. He struck out two and walked a pair.
Freshman Tom Bourdon went 2-for-4 and scored a run and junior Anthony Melchionda went 2-for-5 with an RBI double. Senior Garret Smith earned his fifth save of the year.
Duke took the first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Jeff Kremer led off with a single and was sacrificed to scoring position. With two outs and Kremer on third, Chris Marconcini hit an RBI double to the gap in right for the game’s first run. A stolen base and a walk to Anthony D’Alessandro put runners on the corners and then Will Piwnica-Worms hit a comebacker off of Leonard for an infield single and a run.
