- The best pitching matchup on paper on Friday night was between Virginia’s Danny Hultzen and Georgia Tech’s Mark Pope. As usual with these good pitching matchups, they fail to live up the hype. Pope was on his game for the first six innings giving up only one hit. In the seventh though, it would be a different story as John Hicks and Ryan Levine strung together two hits before coming home on a towering homer by David Coleman over the left field wall to give the Cavs the 3-1 lead which they would hold onto for the 6-2 win. Hultzen was solid like usual giving up two runs in eight innings striking out 12 batters while walking one.
- One of the more shocking results on the evening was UC-Irvine absolutely destroying the Cal-State Fullerton Titans 15-3 in a key Big West matchup between the two schools. D.J. Crumlich, Sean Madigan, Christian Ramirez each had three hits for the Anteaters while Madigan drove in four runs and Ramirez brought hom another three. Cal-State Fullerton didn’t play solid defense behind starter Jake Floethe as he gave up eight runs (four earned) in only 3.1 innings pitched.
- It was not a good day to be ranked between four and seven in this week’s NCBWA poll as all four schools picked up road losses.
- Number 4 ranked Florida got a tough start from Hudson Randall on Friday night as he gave up four runs in the first inning and a total of six in only 2.1 innings of work against Mississippi State as the Bulldogs won 7-5. His relief was better though as they gave up only one run in the final 5.1 innings of work. Jonathan Ogden led the offense for MSU hitting two homers while driving in three runs.
- 27th ranked Oregon State picked up a key home 5-3 victory over the fifth ranked Arizona State Sun Devils. The Beavers got a great start from Sam Gaviglio who pitched a complete game giving up only six hits while striking out six batters and walking only one. OSU’s bottom of the order did most of the damage as eighth hitter Ryan Dunn and ninth hitter Tyler Smith each drove in two runs.
- Sixth ranked Texas A&M dropped their first game of their Big 12 series against Texas Tech 4-3. Trailing 2-1 going into the seventh inning, Texas Tech tied the game with a run in the seventh inning on Jamodrick McGruder’s single through the left side. The Red Raiders then took the lead in the eighth inning with an RBI double to left-center field by Kevin Whitehead. The lead didn’t last though as Jacob House tied the score in the top of the ninth forcing extra innings. Bo Altobelli would scored the winning run in the 12th inning on a Kelby Tomlinson infield single to up the Red Raiders conference record to 5-5 and put Texas A&M at 7-3.
- Kansas State junior LHP Kyle Hunter stymied the Oklahoma offense in his 7.2 innings giving up only four hits. James Allen was able to close the door by pitching the final 1.1 innings to combine on a 2-0 shutout over the Sooners. Jake Brown led the offense going 2-2 with an RBI.
- It is official that the Oregon Ducks are struggling. They lost in 14 innings to a struggling Washington program by a score of 4-3. Catcher B.K. Santy led the offnese going 2-4 with two RBI. Adam Cimber picked up the win by pitching the final 4. 2 innings giving up four hits without allowing a run. The Ducks are now a disappointing 0-4 in the conference while having an overall record of 14-13. The win by the Huskies was their first of the season in Pac-10 play while their overall record is now 8-19.
