#2 Virginia 6 #14 Georgia Tech 2

ATLANTA – Virginia ace Danny Hultzen (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) out-dueled Georgia Tech phenom Mark Pope, and David Coleman (Sr., Richmond, Va.) hit a game-changing three-run home run in the seventh inning as the top-ranked Virginia baseball team rallied to defeat the No. 8 Yellow Jackets 6-2 Friday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta.

Virginia (30-2, 12-1 ACC) won its 11th straight game as it continued the best start in program history. The Cavaliers broke a school record by winning their 10th consecutive road game, dating to the final two road games of the 2010 season. UVa is now 8-0 on the road this season.

Hultzen and Pope locked up in a fantastic pitchers’ duel. Through six innings the two teams combined for only five hits (GT 4, UVa 1) before the Cavaliers rallied in the seventh.

#9 Florida State 5 #10 UNC 3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Friday night began as a pitching duel between the staff aces from a pair of top 10 teams. It ended with offensive fireworks.

Seventh-ranked Florida State erased one-run deficit with a three-run eighth inning, which lifted the Seminoles to a 5-3 victory over sizzling North Carolina at Dick Howser Stadium.

Jayce Boyd followed James Ramsey’s game-tying RBI double with a go-ahead sacrifice fly to center to put the Seminoles in front 4-3. Sherman Johnson snapped out of 0-for-13 slump with an RBI double for an insurance run.

#26 Clemson 12 Maryland 3

Clemson, SC – Brad Miller went 3-for-4 with a triple, double, three runs, and two RBIs to lead Clemson to a 12-3 victory over Maryland in front of 4,119 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Friday night. The Tigers, who took a 1-0 lead in the series, improved to 17-12 overall and 5-8 in the ACC. The Terrapins fell to 14-16 overall and 2-11 in ACC play.

The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead with five runs in the second inning and another run in the third. Maryland answered back with three runs in the fifth inning to cut Clemson’s lead in half. But behind four two-out runs in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh inning, the Tigers cruised to a nine-run victory.

Duke 10 Boston College 6

DURHAM, N.C. – Chris Marconcini drove in three RBI, and Will Piwnica-Worms hit his first home run of the season to lead Duke past Boston College 10-6 in the series opener on Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Marconcini, a freshman outfielder, tagged three hits, stole two bases and increased his team-leading RBI total to 29 as the Blue Devils (19-14, 4-9 ACC) knocked out 16 hits in the win. The 16 hits are the second most in a game this season for Duke and the most since the Blue Devils posted 20 on Feb. 27 against Villanova.

Miami (FL) 4 NC State 1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami Hurricanes (19-11, 9-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) outlasted the NC State Wolfpack (18-13, 5-8 ACC) by a count of 4-1 on Friday night in the first game of a three-game set inside Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables, Fla.

The Hurricanes were powered by a huge first inning that included three runs on five hits, and a dominating performance on the mound by freshman left-handed pitcher Bryan Radziewski.

The first run of the game – eventually being the game-winning RBI – was driven in by left fielder Chantz Mack who laced a double to straight away center field, scoring second baseman Zeke DeVoss from second. After a bunt single and stolen base by center fielder Nathan Melendres, first baseman Rony Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly that plated Mack, and advanced Melendres to third. Freshman third baseman Brad Fieger gave the `Canes their third run of the inning with a RBI single to right.

Virginia Tech 9 Wake Forest 3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Virginia Tech pounded out a season-high tying 18 hits and pushed nine runs across the plate to take the first game of a three-game series against Wake Forest, 9-3, Friday night at WF Baseball Park in ACC action.

Tech (16-16, 2-11) had six players collect at least a pair of hits, as Tim Smalling had a season-high four hits, while Michael Seaborn, Tony Balisteri and Gabe Ortiz each had three. Wake Forest (11-19, 4-9) plated its only runs of the game in the ninth, with Matt Conway registering the lone RBI for the Demon Deacons.

Ronnie Shaban got the Hokies on the board with a lead-off home run in the top of the second, which was his third of the year.
