#2 Virginia 18 Virginia Tech 3

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team scored 17 runs over a four-inning span to bounce back from an early deficit and trounce Virginia Tech, 18-3, Friday night at a frigid English Field in Blacksburg. The Cavaliers (26-2, 9-1 ACC) banged out 16 hits in their largest offensive output of the season and used strong pitching from Danny Hultzen (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) and Whit Mayberry (So., Alexandria, Va.) to cruise to their seventh straight win.

Virginia’s offense was the story of the night. The Cavaliers made six full trips through the batting order and every Virginia starter reached base at least twice. Steven Proscia(Jr., Suffern, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 and tied a career high with five RBI. Jared King (Jr., Radford, Va.) went 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBI. Reed Gragnani (So., Richmond, Va.) scored three times and drove in three runs.

#9 Florida State 6 Maryland 0

Sean Gilmartin and Mack Waugh combined on the fourth shutout of the season as the No. 7 Florida State baseball team blanked Maryland 6-0 in cold and breezy conditions from Shipley Field Friday night.

It was the Seminoles’ 40th consecutive victory over the Terrapins and their 20th win of the season. The ACC Atlantic Division leading Seminoles (20-6, 7-3) were able to pad their divisional lead by exploiting Maryland’s erratic pitching. The Terrapins (12-14, 1-9 ACC) walked 12 and hit one FSU batter.

DURHAM, N.C. – Junior Mark Pope pitched his third complete game of the season, scattering one earned run on four hits to lead No. 6 Georgia Tech (22-5, 10-0 ACC) to a 9-2 win over Duke (15-13, 2-8 ACC) in the series opener Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Pope (7-0) had seven strikeouts in the outing, and earned his conference-leading seventh win of the season. The seven wins are tied for the most in the nation.

“He [Mark Pope] only had one bad inning, but other than that I thought he threw the ball well,” head coach Danny Hall said. “He got some key outs when he needed to, but once they scored those two runs I thought he was dominant for the rest of the game.”
