CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Junior Anthony Melchionda hit a double in the bottom of the 11th that scored sophomore Matt McGovern from first to give the Boston College baseball team a 5-4 walk-off win against No. 1 Virginia Saturday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field. CBD Visit: Boston College edges Virginia 5-4

Boston College got a RBI double in the bottom of the 11th inning from Anthony Melchoinda to drive home Matt McGovern from first base and give the Eagles the 5-4 victory.

After the two teams played a scoreless first inning, Virginia would load up the bases with no outs. They would score a run on a Reed Gragnani sacrifice fly to right and on a Keith Werman safety squeeze to take the early 2-0 lead.  Read the rest of this entry »

Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn extended through 2020 Season

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas and Dave Van Horn have agreed on a new contract that will increase the total compensation package of the Razorbacks’ head baseball coach while retaining the rolling five-year term of the previous employment agreement, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long announced on Friday. CBD Visit: South Carolina edges Auburn 2-1

Columbia, SC – The second ranked Gamecocks kicked off their series with Auburn in style, winning a 2-1 pitcher’s duel in walk-off fashion Friday night in front of a full house of 8,000-plus at Carolina Stadium.

South Carolina ace Michael Roth, the reigning SEC Pitcher of the Week, threw a gem but was matched pitch-for-pitch by Auburn’s John Luke Jacobs, a crafty righthander. Both teams threatened early, but managed to plate just one second-inning run apiece through eight innings of play as both starters settled in and kept the opposing hitters off balance. CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Danny Hultzen (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) and Shane Halley (Jr., Burke, Va.) combined to one-hit Boston College as the top-ranked Virginia baseball team cruised to a 17-0 victory over Boston College Friday at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Big 12 Weekend Preview (4/29-5-1)

The Big 12 race is coming down to the final weeks, and the matchups are getting more and more important. This week, the key series takes place in Austin between Texas and Oklahoma. Both teams are highly ranked, and feature plus pitching staffs. Saturday and Sunday games will be televised, but the key matchup will take place between Taylor Jungmann and Michael Rocha on Friday.

Oklahoma State faces off against Big 12 stalwart Kansas State. The Wildcats are coming off a sweep of Texas Tech, while the Cowboys were swept at Texas A&M. If Kansas State can take two games, they’ll head back to Manhattan tied in the standings with the Cowboys. Read the rest of this entry »

ACC Weekend Preview (April 29th-May 1st)

We start to wind down the 2011 ACC schedule this weekend with the Virginia Cavaliers leading the Coastal Division while Florida State leads the Atlantic. The Cavaliers have a lead of one game in the Coastal Division over Georgia Tech with a 18-3 conference record. Miami is in third place at 15-5 while North Carolina is fourth with a 13-8 record. Virginia Tech comes in fifth at 7-14 while Duke is 4-14 to round out the division. The Atlantic Division is being led by the Florida State Seminoles who are 14-7 which gives them a three game lead over second place Clemson who is 11-10. NC State is in third place at 9-12 while Wake Forest is fourth at 7-14. Boston College is fifth at 6-14 while Maryland rounds out the division at 4-17.  Read the rest of this entry »

SEC Weekend Preview (April 29th-May 1st)

The SEC enters the seventh weekend of play with Vanderbilt, Florida, and South Carolina in a three way tie in the Eastern Division with 14-4 conference records. Georgia is fourth at 11-7 while Tennessee (5-13) and Kentucky (4-15) round out the division. The SEC Western Division is also muddled with a three way tie between Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Auburn who each have identical 9-9 records. Alabama is fourth at 8-10 while Mississippi State is 7-11 for fifth place and rounding out the division is LSU at 5-14. Read the rest of this entry »

Conference USA Weekend Preview (April 29th-May 1st)

With conference-play half way done, the teams of Conference USA hope to finish the month of April strong and prepare themselves for the long home-stretch leading up to the CUSA Tournament in Pearl, MS at the end of May. As it stands, the Golden Eagles currently sit alone atop the standings with a 9-3 record, while Rice sits right behind at 9-6. Meanwhile, Memphis and Houston are tied for third with 7-5 records with UAB and ECU tied at 8-7. Nationally, the Pirates crack the Top 30 this week coming in at #29, while Rice—following their series loss to UAB—drops from #19 to #22, and USM jumps to #20. Read the rest of this entry »

Big East Weekend Preview (April 29th-May 1)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Less than half of the BIG EAST baseball season remains and Connecticut holds a two-game lead on first place. The Huskies enter the weekend with a 12-game winning streak, the longest current streak in the nation. Pittsburgh is in second place, a half-game ahead of St. John’s. The Red Storm and Panthers will battle in Pittsburgh this weekend. Last weekend, three BIG EAST pitchers tossed complete-game shutouts including St. John’s Kyle Hansen (vs. Notre Dame), Connecticut’s Matt Barnes (vs. Georgetown) and Pittsburgh’s Matt Iannazzo (vs. Rutgers).
