CBD Quick Hits for March 25th

Here are some of our thoughts from the games played on March 25th.

  • The big showdown in the ACC this weekend is between the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Miami Hurricanes. The Yellow Jackets got the worst start of the season from Mark Pope which is saying alot as he entered the weekend with a 5-0 record and a 5-0 record and a 0.23 ERA. He ended up giving up three runs (two earned) while working seven innings walking a batters and striking out nine. The Hurricanes returned back to being the “Bad News Bears” though as they committed six team errors including Harold Martinez committing two at shortstop in his first start of the season at that position. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 3-ranked Virginia baseball team scored 10 runs in the fourth inning in blowing out Maryland 14-1 Friday evening at Davenport Field. CBD Column: Six Teams at the Crossroads

After watching Arizona State dismantle Cal State Fullerton 10-1 on Wednesday afternoon, something became abundantly clear; the Titans need to grow up and fast.  The game got out of hand early with Colin O’Connell throwing 52 pitches in the first two innings as he seemed to be mechanically off, and the Titans gave up two unearned runs in the 4th inning to make the game 8-1 after consecutive errors by Nick Ramirez and Austin Kingsolver.  Both players were pulled in the bottom half of the 4th, and was an obvious sign that Coach Serrano wasn’t happy that the players’ heads weren’t in the game.  Couple that with the fact that eight of their players will be kept home while the team travels to Hawaii due to suspension, including DH Carlos Lopez, SS Richy Pedroza and 3B Joe Terry, the team will have a chance to see new leaders emerge at the plate and defensively.  Their pitching staff is littered with miniscule ERA’s and  is the main reason they’re 12-8.  The Titans were 9-9 to start last  season only to just barely miss going to Omaha, but this team has only shown flashes of what Serrano calls “Titan Baseball” and needs to gel in a hurry to defend their Big West crown.  Along with Fullerton, there’s another team with an elite pitching staff that is carrying the ballclub, but not getting much help offensively.

Big 12 Weekend Preview (3/24-3/26)

The Big 12 kicks off their second week of conference play today with a five-series slate. Making their conference debuts, Missouri hosts #8 Oklahoma, while Nebraska travels to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech.

Week one didn’t go as expected. Texas jumped into first place after a sweep of a solid Kansas State team, while favorite Oklahoma scored only four runs in a series loss to Texas A&M in Norman. Texas Tech and Baylor put on quite a display of offense in Waco. Texas Tech overcame large deficits in the final two games, including a 10-6 victory to seal the series on Sunday. Foley’s Quick Hits for March 23rd

Here are some my thoughts from the games played on March 23rd.

The Stetson Hatters picked up a crucial non-conference victory on Wednesday over the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee. The offense was led by Ben Carhart who hit a two run homer in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at four to cause extra innings. Ryan Lashley drove home the eventual winning run in the 11th inning by doubling home Mark Jones. Stetson’s Robbie Powell was excellent in relief pitching the final 3.2 giving up five hits and only one unearned run while striking out five batters.  Read the rest of this entry »
