Foley’s Quick Hits for March 29th

Here are some of my thoughts from college baseball action that took place on March 29th.

  • Congrats to Will Roberts of Virginia for throwing a perfect game on Tuesday against the George Washington Colonials. Roberts struck out 10 batters getting three flyouts and 14 groundouts. The perfect game was only the 19th in NCAA Division 1 baseball history at any length and the first by a UVA pitcher in school history. It was also the first in Division 1 since 2002. Interesting enough, the second to last sentence of the George Washington press release is the first mention they make about the perfect game being tossed.
  • After all the good news at Virginia, it is time to look at how bad the ACC did with a couple of terrible losses including Boston College losing to Northeastern, Campbell defeating Duke, UNC dropping a road game at Charlotte, Mercer beating Georgia Tech, and Radford defeating Virginia Tech. I have been saying to multiple people that I thought the ACC was seriously down this season and it is starting to show it with a couple of these losses.
  • Cal-State Fullerton has started to find their stride as they defeated UCLA 5-3 for their fifth straight win after taking four games from Hawaii over the weekend. Tyler Pill led the offense on Tuesday by going 2-3 with two RBI.
  • Everyone’s favorite mid-major team for the last week Stetson dropped an 8-2 decision to intrastate rival UCF. The Knights got a strong start from Chase Bradford who gave up two runs in six innings while scattering seven hits to up his record to 2-1 on the year. They absolutely hammered the Hatters starter Will Dorsey for six runs (four earned) and 12 hits in only three innings. The Hatters were supposed to be a team to watch but it showed on Tuesday night that they might not be ready for the big stage just yet even though they did defeat Florida State last week. I still believe that UCF is the third best team in the state of Florida behind the Gators and Seminoles.
