Here are some of our thoughts from the games played on March 25th.
- The big showdown in the ACC this weekend is between the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Miami Hurricanes. The Yellow Jackets got the worst start of the season from Mark Pope which is saying alot as he entered the weekend with a 5-0 record and a 5-0 record and a 0.23 ERA. He ended up giving up three runs (two earned) while working seven innings walking a batters and striking out nine. The Hurricanes returned back to being the “Bad News Bears” though as they committed six team errors including Harold Martinez committing two at shortstop in his first start of the season at that position.
- South Carolina took the first game of their weekend series against number 1 ranked Florida 9-2. The Gamecocks jumped all over Florida number 1 starter Brian Johnson for seven runs (six earned) in only 5.1 innings. Shortstop Peter Mooney led the Gamecocks offense by going 3-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
- UConn and Louisville both picked up key victories in their Big East openers on Friday afternoon. UConn dominated Pittsburgh in a 7-0 victory as Matt Barnes pitched a complete game shutout striking out six batters while giving up only four hits. Louisville grabbed a victory over Rutgers to open up Big East play behind a solid pitching performance from sophomore Matt Koch who gave up a run on six hits. The Cardinals offense was led by Stewart Ijames who went 3-5 with three runs scored and five RBI.
- It took 15 innings before Texas freshman Mark Payton stole home to give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead over Oklahoma State. The game was dominated by both pitching staffs, seeing a total of 33 strikeouts, 21 from a pair of Cowboy pitchers. Chris Marlowe was fantastic in relief of Cowboy start Mike Strong. The junior college transfer picked up 12 strikeouts over 6.2 innings of relief work. Taylor Jungmann threw nine scoreless innings for the Longhorns, extending his scoreless innings streak to 25.
- The Longhorns have won all four of their Big 12 games so far, and averaged 12 innings per contest, with only one victory, a 3-0 win over Kansas State, being decided by multiple runs. As for the Wildcats, Kansas State fell to 0-4 in league play, losing the last three in walk off fashion.
- The Big 12 played six games today, and all but one came down to the final inning. Three games were decided in extra innings, while Baylor used a walk off single in the ninth to beat Kansas State. Missouri left the bases loaded in the ninth in a 3-1 loss to Oklahoma before the second game of the doubleheader went long. The only game that wasn’t close was in Lubbock, where Nebraska built a 15 run lead over Texas Tech before winning 15-5.
