CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 3-ranked Virginia baseball team scored four runs in the second inning and made it stand up in defeating Maryland, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at Davenport Field. UVa won both games of the twinbill by 4-2 scores and swept the three-game series.

Virginia (24-2, 8-1 ACC) has won 23 of its last 24 contests with Maryland, including seven straight dating to the 2009 season. The Cavaliers pulled out the doubleheader sweep Saturday with timely two-out hitting and outstanding pitching. All eight Virginia runs Saturday scored after two batters were out, while UVa’s pitching staff limited the Terrapins (11-13, 1-8) to just 11 hits in the doubleheader. After allowing just four earned runs in the three-game series, Virginia lowered its team ERA to an even 2.00.

Wake Forest 8 #7 Florida State 0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Tim Cooney completely shut down the Florida State offense with 11 strikeouts and just one walk to help Wake Forest defeat the Seminoles 8-0 Saturday night at Dick Howser Stadium.

The series is now tied at a game apiece, as Wake Forest improves to 8-14 overall and 3-5 in the ACC. Florida State falls to 17-6, 5-3 ACC.

The win was Wake Forest’s first over Florida State since a 4-2 win at home on March 29, 2008. In addition, the last time that the Deacs shut out the Seminoles was May 21, 1999 in the ACC Tournament, while Wake Forest had not shut out FSU in Tallahassee since April 1, 1967.

#13 North Carolina 11 Duke 2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In what started out as a southpaw pitcher’s duel, Saturday’s game ended in an 11-2 final in favor of North Carolina (22-3, 6-2 ACC) over rival Duke (15-10, 2-6 ACC) as UNC claimed the series with the Blue Devils for the first time since 2008. The Tar Heels exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the eighth and extended a 3-2 lead to 11-2 as they won their eighth straight game.

Duke struck first for the second consecutive game as the Blue Devils forced freshman left-hander Kent Emanuel into a 45-pitch second inning. A lead off single followed by a walk and a hit by pith loaded the bases for Duke before Angelo LaBruna singled through the right side for the game’s first run.

NC State 5 #14 Clemson 3

RALEIGH, N.C. — Rob Chamra and Chris Overman combined to allow one hit in 6 2/3 scoreless innings of relief as NC State defeated 15th-ranked Clemson 5-3 in the second game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference baseball series at Doak Field at Dail Park.

Chamra (4-0) pitched five hitless innings before Phil Pohl’s one-out single in the top of the eighth inning. Chamra retired 13 of the 18 men he faced, including the last seven before Pohl’s single. Chamra walked two and struck out five.

Once Pohl reached base, Wolfpack head coach Elliott Avent summoned Overman from the bullpen, and Overman responded by retiring all five men he faced for his first save.

#17 Georgia Tech 12 Miami FL 3

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Ignited by Evan Martin’s two-run, pinch hit home run to left field, the 12th-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team scored nine runs with two outs in the 10th inning to defeat Miami by a 12-3 decision on Saturday afternoon at Alex Rodriguez Park.

The Jackets improved to 20-4 overall, and 8-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with the series clinching win. Miami falls to 14-10 overall, 6-2 in the ACC.

“It was a great team win, we scored a lot of runs [in the end], but pitching kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win in the 10th inning,” head coach Danny Hall said.

Boston College 2 Virginia Tech 1

KINGSTON, R.I. – Junior Nate Bayuk allowed one hit through 7.0 innings and classmate Marc Perdios drove in two runs to lead the Boston College baseball team past Virginia Tech, 2-1, Saturday at Bill Beck Field at the University of Rhode Island.

Bayuk entered the game in the third inning and finished the game by shutting out Virginia Tech. He faced one batter over the minimum, did not issue a walk and struck out two batters. Fourteen of the 21 outs he recorded were on the ground. Bayuk and redshirt freshman Matt Alvarez, who started the game, combined to retire 13-straight Hokies from the second to the sixth innings.
