CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team posted its sixth shutout in 22 games this season with a 6-0 victory over Towson Tuesday night in the opener of a two-game midweek series at Davenport Field. UVa improved to 20-2 this season with the win, while Towson dropped to 6-13-1.
Virginia starter Will Roberts (Jr., Richmond, Va.) scattered six hits over five scoreless innings. Roberts (4-0) also struck out four in earning the victory; he has pitched in half of UVa’s shutouts this season. Kyle Crockett (Poquoson, Va.) allowed just a pair of hits over three innings before Austin Young (Fr., Mechanicsville, Va.) worked a perfect ninth to complete the shutout.

#13 North Carolina 14 UNC-Wilmington 2
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 12 North Carolina used the big inning to its advantage Tuesday night as the Tar Heels used back-to-back innings of five and four runs to blow open a 14-2 win over UNC Wilmington at Boshamer Stadium. Freshman Colin Moran paced the offense going 3-for-4 with six RBI, while Tommy Coyle chipped in three runs and three hits. Carolina will host High Point on Wednesday with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
Tommy Coyle extended his career-long hitting streak to 11 games early in Tuesday’s contest when he rifled a ball into the right field corner for a one-out double. Back-to-back fly outs following a walk would end the Tar Heel threat.
Clemson, SC – Graduate Justin Sarratt tossed 6.0 scoreless innings of four-hit ball with 10 strikeouts and #15 Clemson scored six runs in the sixth inning in its 7-2 victory over Elon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Tuesday night. The Tigers, who took a 1-0 lead in the two-game, midweek series, improved to 11-7 in 2011. Elon dropped to 15-7 on the season.
Other than Clemson’s single run in the third inning, neither team could scratch during the first five innings. After Sarratt got out of a jam in the top of the sixth inning, Clemson exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away for their fourth win in a row.
Sarratt (1-1), a fifth-year righthander from Gaffney, SC, allowed just four singles, no runs, and one walk with 10 strikeouts to earn the win. He allowed just two baserunners past first base and only one past second base. Alex Frederick pitched 2.0 perfect innings with three strikeouts to close out the game. The four Tiger pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts and allowed only seven hits, all singles.
ATHENS, Ga. – Junior Matt Skole drove in a career-high eight runs on five hits to power the 12th-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team over arch-rival Georgia, 15-6, on Tuesday night at Foley Field.
Georgia Tech (18-4, 6-0 ACC) extended its win streak to 13 games overall, and four straight against the Bulldogs (9-12, 1-2 SEC) dating back to the 2009 season.
“He [Skole] is a good hitter and it was just a question of time as to when he was going to get hot,” head coach Danny Hall said. “We have been fortunate that some other guys have been hot around him and contributed, and how its his turn to step in there.”
Charlotte 13 Wake Forest 10 (11 innings)
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest fell to Charlotte 13-10 in 11 innings in a game that had four lead changes and surpassed the four-hour mark Tuesday evening at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
With the game tied at 7-7 heading into the top of the 11th inning, the 49ers scored six runs, only two of which were earned, to take a 13-7 advantage. The Demon Deacons were able to get three back in the bottom half of the inning, but Charlotte’s Bryan Hamilton ended the game with a strike out to finish off Wake Forest. Hamilton earned the win, while the loss went to John McLeod(1-2).
Mac Williamson and Steven Brooks both reached base several times. Williamson recorded his second-career four-hit game by going 4-for-6 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, and Brooks went 2-for-4 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored.

Maryland 8 George Washington 2
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland broke a 2-2 tie with a five-run sixth inning and Terrapin pitching didn’t allow a run over the final five innings as the Terps beat George Washington 8-2 Tuesday night.
The Terps stole five bases against the Colonials, including three that proved to be crucial in the decisive sixth inning. Kyle Convissar drew a walk, got into scoring position by swiping second and broke the 2-2 tie when he scored on Korey Wacker’s single to left field.
After a passed ball and an infield single by Matt Marquis gave Maryland (11-10) runners on the corners, Marquis stole second and as George Washington catcher Jimmy Best attempted to throw Marquis out, Wacker safely sprinted home for a 4-2

NC State 4 Northwestern 1
RALEIGH, N.C. —Â Matt Bergquist’s two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted NC State past Northwestern 4-1 Tuesday night in the first game of a two-game non-conference series at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack improved to 11-10 with the victory while the Wildcats fell to 5-11.
Pratt Maynard led off the eighth inning for the Wolfpack and walked, sending Northwestern reliever Matt Gailey (1-3) to the showers after 2 2/3 innings. Jack Quigley came in and served up a single to right field by Harold Riggins, then hit Terran Senay with a pitch. First baseman Paul Snieder came in to pitch in relief of Quigley, and Bergquist, who entered the game in the seventh inning for defensive purposes, greeted him with a sharply hit grounder down the third-base line and into the left-field corne

DURHAM, N.C.-The Ohio baseball team got a sterling pitcher-by-committee effort on the mound to defeat the ACC’s Duke Blue Devils 6-3 Tuesday evening at Jack Coombs Field.
The win moved Ohio to 11-9, while Duke dropped to 15-8.
Ohio reliever Brett Barber (2-0) was credited with the win, giving up a run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk in two innings of work. Marck Paliotto got his third save by throwing the game’s last one and a third innings, with one run on one hit with two walks.
Miami (FL) 4 UCF 1
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The first time Michael Broad hit a Grand Slam in a Miami Hurricanes baseball uniform, it was in an exhibition game against the Florida Marlins earlier this year. This time, it meant a lot more as Broad ripped a shot over the scoreboard at Alex Rodriguez Park, propelling the `Canes to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Knights of UCF on Tuesday night.
The other hero of the night was sophomore pitcher Stephen Ewing (2-1, 2.48 ERA) who went a career-high 7 1/3 innings for the Hurricanes (13-8), striking out a career-high 12 – the most by any UM pitcher this season – and picked up his second win of the season.
In a quick game that lasted just 2 hours and 14 minutes, Miami struggled early at the plate against UCF (16-5) starter Brian Adkins (3-1, 2.51 ERA), managing just two hits through the first five innings. For tonight’s starting pitchers on both sides, it was the second time the two have squared off against each other, while attending the same high school in Orlando playing for University High School.
Virginia Tech 9 Liberty 2 (10 innings)
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The day might not have started off well for Johnny Morales, but the Virginia Tech third baseman finished it off in dramatic fashion to help the Hokies to a 9-6 victory in 10 innings over Liberty in non-conference action at Worthington Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
In Morales’ first at-bat of the day in the top of the first, he grounded out to third, but tweaked his ankle on the first-base bag and gingerly took the field in the bottom of the first.
He played a flawless third base, with three putouts and two assists, and helped start one of two Hokies’ double plays, a key turning point in the ballgame in the bottom of the seventh, which kept Liberty ahead by just four at 6-2.
