#17 North Carolina 5 Virginia Tech 4

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Freshman Kent Emanuel equaled a career high with nine strikeouts as No. 15 North Carolina held on for a 5-4 win at Virginia Tech (12-9, 0-5 ACC) to claim the series win over the Hokies. Tom Zengel drove in three runs for the Tar Heels who will look for the series sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Both offenses were stifled through the first three innings as Carolina’s Kent Emanuel and Virginia Tech’s Marc Zecchino combined to allow just one hit apiece. The second time through the order proved to be a different story, however.

Jacob Stallings got things going with a seeing eye single through the right side of the infield with one out. Colin Moran was hit by a pitch moving Stallings into scoring position.

Maryland 4 Boston College 3

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland broke a 3-3 tie on a bases-loaded balk by Boston College pitcher Eric Stevens in the bottom of the seventh and freshman right fielder Charlie White’s leaping catch at the wall in the eighth inning helped preserve a 4-3 Terrapin win Saturday afternoon.

White provided the play of the game with one on and one out in the eighth, leaping at the wall to rob an extra-base hit from Mike Sudol, then throwing to first to double up Matt Watson who likely would have scored and tied the game had White not made the catch.

Catcher Jack Cleary and second baseman Ryan Holland each had singles in the decisive seventh inning. Boston College replaced pitcher Nate Bayuk with Stevens after Bayuk walked Tomo Delp to load the bases. With Matt Marquis at the plate, Stevens dropped the ball just before his delivery, allowing Cleary to come home for the 4-3 lead.

Miami (FL) 4 Wake Forest 3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Harold Martinez’s run-scoring single through the right side in the ninth inning completed a come-from-behind effort for the University of Miami, keeping the Hurricanes undefeated in Atlantic Coast Conference play with a 4-3 series-clinching victory at Wake Forest on Saturday night inside Wake Forest Baseball Park. The win was Miami’s sixth consecutive, and the ‘Canes seventh win in the last eight games.

Trailing 3-2 after eight innings of play, Miami (11-8, 5-0 ACC) used a leadoff walk by Zeke DeVoss from Wake Forest (7-11, 2-3 ACC) reliever John McLeod – who entered in the eighth for fellow reliever Michael Dimock. Following the walk, DeVoss swiped second and junior outfielder Nathan Melendres drove him in to knot the game at 3-all with a standup double down the right field line.

Melendres would come across as the game-winning run a play later with Harold Martinez’s second hit of the evening. Melendres extended his hitting streak to a team-leading six games, while Martinez extended his to five.
