Wacky Wednesdays are back in session as there was a couple of ranked teams dropping games to unranked squads.
- The Clemson Tigers lost in Greenville SC to Presbyterian College 4-3 which extend the Tigers losing streak to five games and evened up their record at 7-7. Clemson starting pitcher Will Lamb went two innings giving up two runs on five hits. I expected coming into this year that Lamb would be a key component in the Tigers pitching staff but he has been up and down this season. He is currently sporting a 7.04 ERA in 7.2 innings while making three appearances and two starts.
- The victory by the Blue Hose was their seventh straight and first over Clemson since the 1949 season. Coach Elton Pollock was excited about the win saying:Â “The guys played extraordinarily hard and did a great job overall. It was just a team effort and we’re excited about this team and hopefully we can keep up this momentum. I’m proud of the overall effort of our players and coaches and definitely the support of our fans.”
- Arizona State completed their two game sweep over Oklahoma by defeating the Sooners 6-4 behind a solid start from Jake Barrett who struck out eleven batters in six innings pitched. Mitchell Lambson picked up his first save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. These two games showed the Sooners a couple of areas to work on especially with the mid-week pitching giving up 12 runs in the two games in their first real test during the week.
- One of the other shocking result was the struggles that the Arizona Wildcats had at Wichita State. They were swept by the Shockers as they dropped a 8-3 decision on Wednesday after losing 6-5 on Tuesday. We should see if these losses by the Wildcats are a sign to come the rest of the year or if the Shockers are a quality program which might compete fro the Missouri Valley title this year.
- The Louisville Cardinals were not much better dropping two games to USC including a 9-4 loss on Wednesday coming on the heels of a 4-3 loss. The Cardinals are now 1-3 in midweek games which means they are having a ton of trouble finding quality midweek pitching. The victory by the Trojans put them 7-10 record as they will host Pacific over the weekend while Louisville heads back home to play Xavier.
- Dallas Baptist senior catcher Tyler Robbins broke a 1-1 in the 11th inning with a two run homer over the left field fence to lead the Patriots to a 3-1 victory over Rice. The win by DBU ups their record to 11-6 while Rice drops to 10-9 on the year. The Rice Owls have one more week to find their offense as they host WAC member Louisiana Tech before opening C-USA play next week.
