#5 Florida State 3 Boston College 1

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – It was another Friday Night Light’s Out for Sean Gilmartin and the fifth-ranked Florida State baseball team.

Gilmartin struck out 11 for the second consecutive game and limited Boston College to a run on two hits through seven innings as the Seminoles opened their Atlantic Coast Conference season with a 3-1 victory.

With Gilmartin effectively mixing change-ups, fastballs and sliders, the Seminoles (13-1, 1-0 ACC) made a three-run fifth inning stand up for their sixth consecutive victory.

#6 Virginia 5 #8 Clemson 0

CLEMSON, S.C. – The sixth-ranked Virginia baseball team opened ACC play with a 5-0 shutout of No. 4 Clemson Friday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C. The Cavaliers (14-1, 1-0 ACC) received another stellar start from staff ace Danny Hultzen (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) in recording their fifth shutout in the last eight games and pushing their winning streak to eight.

Facing a Clemson offense which entering the game with an ACC-leading .343 batting average, Hultzen worked 6.2 innings, giving up just five hits and three walks while striking out 14, one off his career high set two weeks ago against East Carolina. He fanned at least two batters in six of the seven innings in which he pitched. At the plate Hultzen went 1-for-2 and knocked in a pair of runs.

#14 North Carolina 7 Wake Forest 1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 14 North Carolina opened the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference campaign on a positive note as the Tar Heels claimed a 7-1 win over Wake Forest (4-9) Friday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Patrick Johnson struck out a season-high nine batters, while improving to 3-0 on the year with a 1.07 ERA.

Jesse Wierzbicki paced the offense with a pair of extra base hits, while Ben Bunting drove in three runs.

Senior Patrick Johnson struck out a season-high nine batters and did not allow a run over 5.2 innings as he claimed his third win of the season. Johnson and Wake Forest starter Austin Stadler combined to allow two hits apiece through the opening three innings.

#25 Georgia Tech 1 Maryland 0

ATLANTA – Mark Pope pitched his second straight complete game shutout, holding Maryland (8-5, 0-1 ACC) to just four hits, in No. 24 Georgia Tech’s (10-4, 1-0 ACC) 1-0 win over the Terrapins to open Atlantic Coast Conference play Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

“I was up sick all last night so I was really nervous coming out to start the game,” Pope said. “I wasn’t sure how my body was going to react, but after a couple of innings I started to feel really good.

“They [Maryland] really came out swinging because they knew I was going to throw strikes. I just tried to go after their hitters and make them work because I know I have a great defense behind me and they really came through tonight.”

NC State 4 Duke 3

DURHAM, N.C. — Terran Senay’s two-out single in the top of the ninth inning drove in Pratt Maynard with the go-ahead run Friday night as NC State came from behind to defeat Duke 4-3 in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Chris Overman (2-0), who pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning in relief of starter Cory Mazzoni, got the win. Grant Sasser loaded the bases with two down in the bottom of the ninth but escaped with his second save.

Miami (FL) 3 Virginia Tech 1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman Bryan Radziewski tossed a career-best seven innings without a run allowed, while sophomore Stephen Perez collected three hits and drove in one, earning Miami a 3-1 victory in its ACC-opener against Virginia Tech on Friday night at Alex Rodriguez Park.

Radziewski, making his third consecutive series-opening start, didn’t allow a single run in his career-long seven innings on the hill – improving to 2-1 on the campaign. Tonight, the southpaw was helped with timely Miami (6-8, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) hits, adding runs to the scoreboard in the process.

The Hurricanes plated two runs in the bottom of the second, which turned out to be enough for the win.
