#8 Virginia 7 Niagara 0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The eighth-ranked Virginia baseball team used a career-high 7.2 scoreless innings from starter Will Roberts (Jr., Richmond, Va.) in shutting out Niagara, 7-0, Wednesday at Davenport Field. Roberts allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out seven as he earned the win and improved to 1-0 this year.

Virginia’s pitching staff ran its scoreless inning streak to 25 innings and recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since Feb. 20-21, 2009, against Bucknell. UVa’s pitchers allowed just four baserunners, none of whom advanced past second base. After allowing a two-out double in the first inning, Roberts settled down and retired 15 straight batters until a two-out single in the sixth inning. He topped his previous career high of seven innings, set May 12, 2009, against VCU.

#9 Clemson 5 Wofford 1

Clemson, SC – Four Tiger pitchers combined to hold Wofford to one unearned run while stranding 10 runners on base in #4 Clemson’s 5-1 victory at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers, who won their fifth game in a row, improved to 6-1 overall, while the Terriers dropped to 6-3. The win marked the Tigers’ 1,000th all-time victory at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, which opened in 1970.

The Terriers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but Clemson tied the score with a run in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth inning. Then, Kevin Pohle and Jonathan Meyer worked out of several jams in the latter stages of the game to keep the lead in Clemson’s favor.

#18 North Carolina 14 Davidson 6

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Jesse Wierzbicki blasted his second home run of the season and Cody Stiles earned his first career win as No. 17 North Carolina claimed a 14-6 win over visiting Davidson (5-6) Wednesday. The win improves Carolina to 8-1 on the year as the Tar Heels get set to host Stony Brook in a three-game series starting Friday at 3 p.m.

Carolina dug itself an early hole as the Wildcats pushed two runs across in the top of the first but the Tar Heels bounced back with a pair of runs in their half of the first to even the score.

Georgia State 6 #28 Georgia Tech 3

ATLANTA-Mark Micowski homered and drove in two runs to back strong pitching by Aidan Francis and Jake Dyer as Georgia State (8-1) defeated No. 23 Georgia Tech, 6-3, Wednesday at Tech’s Russ Chandler Stadium. The Panthers won at Georgia Tech (5-4) for the third time in the last five years.

Francis (1-0), the senior left-hander from Australia, went seven innings for the Panthers, allowing two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks to earn the victory. Junior Jake Dyer pitched the final two innings for his first save.

“These kind of wins are always great for your team,” said GSU head coach Greg Frady. “When you are playing a team that is ranked in the Top 25, you want to show what you can do, and our team did a great job. We had outstanding performances by a lot of individuals, led by Aidan Francis and Mark Micowski.”

Virginia Tech 9 Liberty 1

BLACKSBURG, Va. ­– Joe Parsons pitched a career-high seven strong innings as Virginia Tech defeated the Liberty University Flames, 9-1, in a non-conference baseball outing at English Field on Wednesday. The win improved Tech to 7-2 on the season, while the Flames fell to 3-6.

Parsons retired the first seven batters he faced and stranded runners in scoring position during the third, fourth and sixth innings before giving up an unearned run in the seventh. The senior right-hander struck out a career-high seven batters and walked just two on the way to his second win without a loss. Relievers Sean McDermott and Brandon Fisher each added a scoreless inning for the Hokies, Fisher adding two punch-outs to end the game.
