#5 Florida State 5 #1 Florida 3

TAMPA, Fla. – The opportunity to knock off the top-ranked team in college baseball doesn’t come often, but it did come early for Mike Martin’s Florida State team.

And the Seminoles (8-0) didn’t waste it.

Fifth-ranked FSU parlayed a five-run third inning into a 5-3 victory over consensus No. 1 Florida in Tuesday’s Florida Four Classic night-cap at Steinbrenner Field.

#8 Virginia 9 William and Mary 0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three Virginia pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout and John Hicks (Jr., Sandy Hook, Va.) went 4-for-5 with three RBI as the eighth-ranked Cavaliers defeated William and Mary 9-0 Tuesday at Davenport Field.

Kyle Crockett (Fr., Poquoson, Va.) made his first career start and was impressive, working four innings and allowing just a pair of hits and a walk while striking out six. He earned his first career win. Justin Thompson (Jr., Danville, Va.) pitched three scoreless innings, andShane Halley (Jr., Burke, Va.) worked two perfect frames to finish off the shutout. Virginia’s pitchers continued to pound the strike zone, striking out 11 Tribe batters while walking just one. UVa pitchers have struck out 85 and walked 12 this year.

#18 North Carolina 4 Charlotte 2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Kent Emanuel was impressive in the first home start of his career Tuesday as the left-hander threw eight innings of one-run ball, while striking out nine in No. 17 North Carolina’s 4-2 win over Charlotte (7-2). The top three batters in the lineup combined for six hits as the Tar Heels moved to 7-1 on the year. The Tar Heels will host Davidson in a mid-week tilt on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Emanuel was dealing from the get-go as the freshman southpaw forced a ground out before getting back-to-back strikeouts to end the first.

South Florida 4 #26 Miami (FL) 2

TAMPA – Junior Andrew Longley’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning propelled the University of South Florida to a 4-2 win over the Miami Hurricanes Tuesday night at Steinbrenner Field in Game 1 of the 2011 Florida Four.

With the bases loaded, Longley sent a 2-2 offering from Miami reliever Daniel Miranda up the middle, ricocheting off second-baseman Michael Broad’s glove and into shallow center. The hit allowed Todd Brazeal and Sam Mende to score, providing the final 4-2 outcome.

The win is the Bulls’ first over the Hurricanes since 2004.

NC State 3 Davidson 2

RALEIGH, N.C. — Danny Canela drove in Andrew Ciencin with an eighth-inning single to center field, and Ethan Ogburn and two relievers combined on a five-hitter Tuesday to lift NC State past Davidson 3-2 at Doak Field at Dail Park.

Ciencin, who led off the eighth with his second double and third hit of the game, made a winner of Chris Overman (1-0), who worked 1 2/3 scorless innings. The game’s real pitching story was Ogburn, who started, worked six innings and did not allow a hit until one out in the sixth. He struck out 11 while walking just two.

High Point 9 Duke 3

The High Point University baseball team handed Duke a 9-3 loss Tuesday in Durham, N.C. Junior Drew Dades (Maitland, Fla./Bishop Moore) got the win in his first career start and sophomore Mike Mercurio (Brewster, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) went 3-5 with a bases clearing double in High Point’s six-run fourth inning. It is High Point’s fourth straight win.

“This is obviously a great road win against a Duke team that has been playing very well,” said head coach Craig Cozart. “We came out with tremendous energy and were relentless offensively. Kyle Mahoney (Patterson, N.Y./Carmel) took control of the pitching staff and called a great game. Dades had a great start and Spencer Andrews (Broadway, N.C./Chatham Central ) andRyan Retz (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) were outstanding out of the bullpen.”

Wake Forest 11 UNC-Greensboro 1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sophomore Matt Conway hit his first two home runs of the season and drove in four runs, and the Wake Forest pitching staff surrendered just three hits en route to an 11-1 victory over UNC Greensboro Tuesday evening at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

The victory pushes Wake Forest to .500 with a 4-4 record, while the Spartans drop to 4-4.

The Deacons turned in their best offensive performance of the year with season-highs of 11 runs and 12 hits.
