CBD Column: Hultzen and Bradley Passing Purke?
Coming into the season, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Matt Purke was the top draft eligible left-handed pitcher for the 2011 MLB Draft. Things have definitely changed over the first five weeks of the season. Both Virginia’s Danny Hultzen and Georgia Tech’s Jed Bradley have jumped right in the middle of the discussion with outstanding starts to the year. Read the rest of this entry »

CBD Journal with Drew Fann (March 30th)
After starting the week with an 11-2 victory over Tennessee Tech, we traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas for our conference series with the Razorbacks. We finished on the wrong end of a pitcher’s duel Friday night, as Arkansas scored two runs in the eighth inning to win 2-1. Yet we were able to come back and take the series, winning Saturday 4-1 and 2-1 on Sunday. Saturday’s victory came after eight strong innings on the bump by Grayson Garvin. Garv allowed one run on two hits and two walks, and struck out six batters. On Sunday, starter Taylor Hill combined with four relievers to help us clinch the series. One of the two runs Sunday came courtesy of Aaron Westlake’s fourth home run of the season, and I’m pretty sure if the Arkansas scoreboard hadn’t stopped it someone would have found it in Oklahoma. Foley’s Quick Hits for March 29th
Here are some of my thoughts from college baseball action that took place on March 29th.
- Congrats to Will Roberts of Virginia for throwing a perfect game on Tuesday against the George Washington Colonials. Roberts struck out 10 batters getting three flyouts and 14 groundouts. The perfect game was only the 19th in NCAA Division 1 baseball history at any length and the first by a UVA pitcher in school history. It was also the first in Division 1 since 2002. Interesting enough, the second to last sentence of the George Washington press release is the first mention they make about the perfect game being tossed. Read the rest of this entry »

Consistency. It is a word that every coach uses on a daily basis. Consistency in your swing, mechanics on the mound, weight room, and in the classroom. It is much easier coaching and working with a known product then trying to deal with the unknown. Our players have done a great job at working at being consistent in their work on and off the diamond. It seems as if we can’t get into a consistent swing with Mother Nature. It feels like every week I stare at my computer, start thinking about the week that has gone by and write about some of the things that have gone on, seems easy enough. Not an easy task when you cannot get onto a field because of rain or in my case I had to cancel our conference doubleheader with Bloomfield because of snow! Snow in late March is not what you plan on as a baseball coach. Read the rest of this entry »

Victories seem to be few and far between for the Leathernecks as we come closer and closer to the opening conference series against South Dakota State. For the most part, it seems like we have been shooting ourselves in the foot. Errors, walks, and giving away free bases have plagued us all season. Offensively, poor situational hitting like failing to get a man in from third with less than two outs has also hurt us. Our pitchers have been working hard, and we have wasted quality starts from both Zach Sterling and Dan Russell. We all know that we can play better than this, and we have had a few bright spots this season. It is time to turn the corner and get this season back on the right track.
