CBD Journal with Western Illinois (Feb. 22nd)

After a rough opening series against Samford we realize we have a lot of work to do in order to be the team we want to become in May. With a team loaded with newcomers this first series was a huge learning experience for us and I’m confident we will bounce back and play much better baseball this coming weekend when we head on the road to play Georgia State. Foley’s Quick Hits for Feb. 21st

2011 NCBWA Weekly Poll Has UCLA Ranked #1

The National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) just released their top 30 weekly poll. UCLA takes the #1 spot this week, followed by #2 Florida, #3 Vanderbilt, #4 Oklahoma and #5 TCU.

Francona, Wallach Highlight 2011 National College Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Current Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona and Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach are two of the seven inductees announced for the 2011 class of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.

Joining Francona and Wallach are, Danny Goodwin (catcher, Southern University), Dick Groat (shortstop, Duke), Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones (coach, Grambling State), Oddibe McDowell (outfielder, Arizona State),and Bill Wilhelm (coach, Clemson.)

Wallach is gaining admittance based on his school-record setting career at first base for Cal State Fullerton from 1978-1980. Francona, a two time World Series winning manager, is being honored for his career in outfield for Arizona, where he was the 1980 National Player of the Year.

The seven member class will be inducted on July 3rd in Lubbock, Texas.

2011 CBD Mid-Major Poll (Feb. 21st)

We have a new #1 after a very good opening weekend of college baseball. It was a very good weekend for alot of clubs and a very bad weekend for some clubs.

UCONN was the new and sexy pick in the Big East this year but Louisville showed it wants to remain the top dog in the Big East. Louisville(3-0) moves into the #1 spot in the poll after beating Michigan, Ohio St and Minnesota in the Big East/Big 10 Challenge. UCONN(1-2) did not have nearly the same success, dropping the opener to Purdue followed by loss to Minnesota before beating Michigan on Sunday and dropped from #2 in poll to #9. ACC Recap for Feb. 20th

The ACC wrapped up the weekend with all the teams in action. The conference went 9-4 with North Carolina sweeping a doubleheader with USC and Missouri.
