TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Mike McGee has spent the past few weeks tuning up his bat in the cage with assistant coach Mike Martin, Jr. The senior All-American’s performance in Saturday’s 16-3 rout of Hoftrsa left little doubt that he’s hitting on all cylinders.

McGee matched a career-high with six RBI on a 3-for-4 performance, highlighted by his fourth inning grand slam; his first home run of the season.

#10 Virginia 4 East Carolina 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team clinched a series win over East Carolina with a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon in front of 3,027 fans at Davenport Field. Tyler Wilson (Sr., Midlothian, Va.) pitched 6.1 innings and struck out 10, while John Hicks (Jr., Sandy Hook, Va.) went 3-for-4 to pace the Cavaliers, who improved to 6-0 on the young season.

Wilson (2-0) earned the win and worked into the seventh inning for the first time as a starting pitcher. He allowed three runs (two earned) and seven hits and did not walk a batter. Virginia’s bullpen – Kyle Crockett (Fr., Poquoson, Va.), Justin Thompson (Jr., Danville, Va.) and Branden Kline (So., Frederick, Md.) – combined to allow just one hit over the final 2.2 innings. Kline picked up his third save this year.

East Carolina Recap

#11 Clemson 19 Charleston Southern 1

Clemson, SC – Twelve different Tigers had at least one hit and four Tiger pitchers combined on a four-hitter in #5 Clemson’s 19-1 victory over Charleston Southern in front of 5,089 fans in the First Pitch Invitational at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers improved to 4-1 overall, while the Buccaneers fell to 2-4.

Clemson scored at least two runs in each of the first five innings and cruised to the 18-run win. A total of 12 Tigers had at least one hit, 11 scored at least one run, and 10 had at least one RBI.

#21 North Carolina 7 Seton Hall 1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Tar Heels used the big inning to their advantage for the second straight day as Carolina exploded for six runs in the fourth and fifth innings en route to a 7-1 win over Seton Hall Saturday. Patrick Johnson earned the win going seven innings, while allowing just one run for his first win of the season. The Tar Heels and Pirates will close out the series Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Tar Heels struck first in the bottom of the very first inning as Ben Bunting drew a leadoff walk to open the frame.Tommy Coyle provided a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Bunting to second before the senior outfielder swiped third.

#22 Miami (FL) 10 Appalachian State 0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Sophomore Eric Whaley went seven scoreless innings on the mound and seven Hurricanes collected base hits on Saturday afternoon, helping the 20th-ranked University of Miami baseball team to a 10-0 victory – taking two-of-three games in the series – against visiting Appalachian State inside Alex Rodriguez Park.

Miami (4-3) used strong pitching in the front and back end of the series this weekend, getting the second consecutive solid outing of the season from Whaley – a strong-throwing right-hander from Pompano Beach, Fla. Whaley went a career-long seven scoreless innings on the bump, spreading out three hits and tallying a career-high nine strikeouts. He walked just one batter in collecting the win, improving to 2-0 on the year.

#24 Georgia Tech 5 St. John’s 0

ATLANTA – Junior Jed Bradley pitched seven innings of no-hit baseball to lead No. 21 Georgia Tech (5-2) to a 5-0 win over No. 23 St. John’s (2-3) Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Georgia Tech recorded its second straight shutout to clinch the three-game series, and has limited St. John’s batters to 11 hits in the first two games.

“These guys [St. John’s] are really good hitters but we have pitched really well against them,” head coach Danny Hall said. “I think all told, our guys have been around the plate and competitive with all of their pitches and that is what you want to see.”

#30 California 4 NC State 0

The No. 17-ranked Cal baseball team recorded its third shutout of the season with a 4-0 victory over North Carolina State Saturday (Feb. 26) at the Caravalle Resorts Tournament at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Golden Bears (4-1) were led by freshman Andrew Knapp’s first collegiate homer, a three-run shot in the second inning, and the solid pitching of junior right-hander Erik Johnson.

On Friday, Cal had topped Coastal Carolina, 17-0. The Bears had opened the 2011 campaign with a 7-0 shutout of Utah, Feb. 20 at Evans Diamond. In game two of the Feb. 20 doubleheader versus Utah, Knapp had tallied the game-winning hit in a 6-5 come-from-behind win.

Maryland 3 Army 0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – David Carroll pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings, Brandon Padula hit a first-inning home run and Maryland took a 3-0 victory over Army Saturday afternoon.

Carroll (2-0) was dominant in his second start for the Terps, scattering five hits while striking out four. Michael Boyden came on to record the final five outs and earn the save as Maryland improved to 4-3.

A junior-college transfer from Western Nevada, Carroll lowered his ERA to 0.68 on the season. He went six innings and gave up a single run in a win over No. 6 Texas a week ago.

Game 1: Virginia Tech 7 Niagara 2
Game 2: Virginia Tech 11 Niagara 2

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech used solid pitching and timely hitting to sweep a baseball double-header, 7-2 and 11-7, against Niagara University at English Field on Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Hokies to 6-1, while Niagara dropped to 0-6.

Tech pitchers gave up just one extra-base hit during the twin bill and held the Purple Eagles to nine runs on 12 hits over 18 innings. Meanwhile, Tech’s bats produced 23 hits, 12 of which went for extra bases.

Northwestern 10 Wake Forest 3

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Northwestern jumped out to a six-run lead after two innings and never looked back in cruising past Wake Forest 10-3 Saturday evening at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

Chris Lashmet collected three hits while driving in two and scoring a pair of runs to pace the Wildcat offense.

NU jumped on Wake Forest starting pitcher Brian Holmes right out of the gates. With two on and one out in the top of the first, Lashmet singled to plate Trevor Stevens from second base to get the Wildcats on the board. Chris Kontos followed with an RBI double before Jack Havey plated a pair with a two-out double to make it 4-0.

Duke 5 Villanova 1

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke used a five-run eighth inning to topple Villanova 5-1 and clinch the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs field.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Duke (6-1) took advantage of two Villanova miscues to plate the tying run on a wild pitch and the go-ahead run on a Wildcat fielding error. After reaching base with his second hit of the game, freshman Chris Marconcini scored the game-winner from second base on the Villanova throwing error to first on a ground ball.
