CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – John Barr (Sr., Ivyland, Pa.) hit a two-out RBI double to score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as the No. 10 Virginia baseball team picked up a 4-3 victory over VMI Wednesday afternoon in the 2011 home opener at Davenport Field.

While the game was played on a chilly, cloudy afternoon, the game drew 2,175 fans – by far the most spectators for a Virginia baseball home opener. The previous high was 1,567 last season.

Florida Atlantic 7 #22 Miami (FL) 4

Boca Raton, Fla. – Strong starting pitching, timely clutch hitting and solid defense were the variables that led the Florida Atlantic University baseball team to a historic 7-4 win over No. 20-ranked University of Miami on Tuesday evening at the FAU Baseball Stadium.

The Owls, 4-1, beat the Hurricanes for the first time in eight games between the two South Florida rivals, and the first time at home since the 2001 season. Miami, four-time national champions, lead the all-time series by a 47-9 margin.

#24 Georgia Tech 7 Georgia Southern 4

TATESBORO, Ga. – Freshman Daniel Palka went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lift No. 21 Georgia Tech (3-2) to a 7-4 win over Georgia Southern (3-2) Wednesday evening at J.I. Clements Stadium in Statesboro, Ga.

The Jackets evened the four-game midweek series at 1-1 with the win. The two teams will meet again

Palka entered the game with just two hits in his first 14 career plate appearances, but erupted with hits in his first three at bats Wednesday. The Lyman, S.C. native’s three-run shot with two outs in the third inning gave the Jackets a 3-0 lead. It was the first home run of the season for Georgia Tech. He was a triple shy of the cycle.

Duke 11 NC Central 2

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke used four freshmen pitchers, including winner Robert Huber, to hold N.C. Central to two runs in an 11-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Durham Athletic Park.

Huber (1-0), the freshman right-hander, picked up his first career win by holding the Eagles to one run on four hits over his four complete innings. Huber took over for fellow freshman Dillon Haviland, who made his first career start and threw two scoreless frames.

Maryland 8 Navy 3

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland scored six runs in the third inning off two-run base hits byKorey Wacker, Tim Kiene and Curtis Lazar, Michael Boyden went four strong innings on the mound and Maryland defeated Navy 8-3 Wednesday afternoon at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.

Boyden allowed just a single run on four hits while striking out four without issuing a walk. Navy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Maryland kept within striking distance when Boyden got Navy center fielder Alex Azor to ground into a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.
